Miami Heat star Tyler Herro was left wincing in pain after taking a low blow from a referee in a remarkable accident on Wednesday night.

The Heat fell to a 118-108 defeat to the Dallas Mavericks on the night but, on social media, fans were only talking about Herro's unfortunate injury.

During the second quarter at the American Airlines Center, Herro was caught unaware as he lined up to shoot a technical free throw.

Herro stepped up to the line and, as he did, referee Jenne Reneau passed the ball to him. Unfortunately for the Heat star, he was practicing his form and didn't see it.

With Herro distracted, the ball bounced towards him and hit him in the groin, causing him to double up as Reneau ran over to check on him and apologize.

Herro, in the heat of the moment, appeared frustrated with the official as he swatted the ball away and seemingly dismissed of her apology.

Nevertheless, it appeared that the incident faze him too much as, shortly after, Herro made the free throw to cut the Mavericks' lead down to 10 at halftime.

Interestingly, however, fans online noted that after the incident Herro failed to score another point as the Heat fell to their eighth defeat of the season.

Herro scored all 20 of his points on the night in the opening two quarters. He also picked up four rebounds during the game.

In the end, however, it was Cooper Flagg who stole the show. The rookie scored 22 points, six rebounds and two assists in 31 minutes to lead the Mavs to the win.

Anthony Davis also put in a superb display on the night, picking up 17 points, 17 rebounds and four assists for the home side.

The Heat will be hoping for better fortunes next time out, when they take on the Orlando Magic on Friday night.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks will also return to the court on Friday when they face reigning champions the Oklahoma City Thunder.
