Liverpool in "advanced talks" to sign Bundesliga star, Reds and Spurs in pole position

Liverpool are reportedly pushing ahead with plans to sign RB Leipzig rising star Yan Diomande, with the club said to be “very interested” in a deal for the highly rated 19-year-old winger.

While Arne Slot is understandably concerned with his team’s defensive performance this season, their attacking form is not much better.

In 14 Premier League games in 2025/26, the Reds have scored 21 goals and conceded 21. This form has them stranded in eighth place, eliminated from the League Cup and struggling in Europe.

Something major needs to change and some believe Liverpool need to spend more to improve the situation despite a £466m spend in the summer window to sign the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak.

Leipzig set €100m valuation

According to Sky Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the Premier League champions are among several European giants monitoring Diomande’s rapid development.

Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona are also tracking the Ivorian forward, whose performances in Germany have quickly attracted widespread attention.

RB Leipzig are understood to be in a strong position regarding Diomande’s future. The Bundesliga club has placed a €100m (£88m) price tag on the youngster, who is tied to a long-term contract until the summer of 2030.

Despite that stance, Liverpool are believed to be in “very advanced” talks with the player’s representatives, having identified Diomande as a serious candidate to strengthen Arne Slot’s frontline.

Liverpool’s attacking concerns in 2025

It has been a difficult start to the season for the Reds, who sit eighth in the Premier League after Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland. Slot’s side have won just seven of their opening 14 league matches, and issues in attack have been a growing concern.

Mohamed Salah’s recent dip in form has added to the pressure, with Slot benching the Egyptian for a second match in a row.

January move uncertain

While Liverpool’s interest is firm, it is not yet clear whether the club will attempt to accelerate a deal in January. Reports in Germany suggest Leipzig have not received any formal bids, and the Bundesliga side remain relaxed about the situation.

Diomande only joined Leipzig in July from La Liga outfit Leganes on a five-year contract, and the club are under no pressure to sell.

Breakout season for Diomande

The teenager has made an immediate impact, registering four goals and four assists in his first 14 appearances across all competitions. A stunning run of six goal contributions in three games earned him a nomination for the Bundesliga Rookie of the Month award in November.

Diomande’s explosive pace and sharp finishing have seen him compared to Kylian Mbappé, while others have likened him to Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi. Before moving to Germany, he made 10 La Liga appearances for Leganes in 2024/25, scoring twice.

Liverpool’s interest appears genuine and with the club searching for fresh spark in attack, Diomande could emerge as a major transfer story heading into 2026.
