Tottenham planning to make a move for Marcus Rashford next summer if Barcelona does not trigger his €30 million buy option.
Tottenham Hotspur are expected to push for additional attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window as they look to turn their season around in the Premier League. Thomas Frank recently backed it up by claiming the club are “prepared” to do business if the opportunity arises in the winter window.
The current Spurs squad has several glaring holes that need immediate attention, and bringing in established, high-calibre players will be crucial in speeding up Thomas Frank’s rebuild in N17. One of their most pressing concerns lies on the left wing. Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert competing for the role, but neither of them have managed to lock down their spot in Thomas Frank’s XI. Summer signing Xavi Simons has also been tried in that position a few times but the returns have been underwhelming.
In recent weeks, Spurs have been linked with Marcus Rashford, who is on loan at Barcelona from Manchester United. The England international was frozen out of the Manchester United squad by head coach Ruben Amorim last year, which prompted him to join Aston Villa on loan in January. After it became apparent that he does not lie in Amorim’s plans, he clinched a season-long loan move to Barcelona in the past summer transfer window.

Will Marcus Rashford fit to Tottenham’s tactics?
Tottenham willing to offer Marcus Rashford an immediate leading role
Marcus Rashford has regained his mojo and swagger back at Barcelona. The forward has been among the La Liga club’s best players this season, registering six goals and nine assists in 19 games across all competitions thus far. He has turned up in big Champions League nights, most notably scoring a brace in the 2-1 win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park in September.
Despite the 28-year-old’s power-packed performances in Spain and Barcelona having a €30 million purchase option in their grips, his future remains far from solved. Now, according to a report from Spanish newspaper AS (h/t Fichajes), Tottenham want to revamp their offensive unit with the signing of Rashford. They view the Englishman as an ideal profile and are willing to offer him an immediate ‘leading role’.
It is also worth noting that a fully-fit Barcelona squad have Robert Lewandowski, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha in their attack, and a guaranteed place in the starting XI might be dicey for Rashford then. And should he return to Man United, his services currently aren’t that valued under current manager Ruben Amorim.
Barcelona is Rashford’s number one option for a permanent move next summer, but given Spurs’ crunch financial situation and need to prioritise other positions has put his future in jeopardy. Add that to internal competition, constant changes in the XI and the possibility of not having a long-term starting role, has raised doubts. The player apparently wants to enjoy a prominent role for the betterment of both his club and international career, and Spurs are ready to offer him that.

A return to the Premier League remains on the cards?
Following Son Heung-min’s departure to Los Angeles FC in the summer, Tottenham have been missing the profile of a wide attacker who can unsettle defences, create something out of nothing, take on defenders and score goals. Rashford ticks all those boxes, and being a proven commodity in the Premier League, adds more value to his name.
If Barcelona eventually decides to not trigger the buy clause, the England international will return to Man United and become one of the major opportunities in the summer market. Knowing the player’s qualities on and off the ball, as well as eagerness to achieve stability in his career and become a leading face in a growing project, Spurs could pounce on Rashford.
The Wythenshawe-born star’s decision to push for a move to Barca has worked out extremely well, reviving his fading career. It has helped him get back in the England squad too. Thus, it would be immature to close the door on a return to the Premier League next year. For now, Tottenham will be closely watching the developments surrounding Rashford, looking to strike if the Catalan giants decide to not activate his purchase option.
