Declan Rice suggests Liverpool transfer target is on the same level as Erling Haaland

Liverpool may need to strengthen their squad in January, with a couple of names already linked.

Marc Guehi signing for the Reds could now happen despite previous thinking that there would be very little transfer activity this winter.

Antoine Semenyo is linked to Liverpool as well, ahead of his £65m release clause becoming active next month.

Declan Rice praise for Ryan Gravenberch and Antoine Semenyo

The 25-year-old scored 11 and assisted six in the Premier League for the Cherries last season.

He continued that fine form into the start of 2025/26 as well, netting six and assisting three in 13.

As a result, Semenyo was nominated for the FSA Men’s Player of the Year Award, which was announced this week.

The Liverpool target was up against big names such as Erling Haaland, Ryan Gravenberch and Declan Rice.

Rice took home the award and now, when speaking to talkSPORT, has come out to praise his rivals, saying all three are ‘top players’ who have just had great years.

He said: “Yeah, it’s a massive privilege, I think first of all because of the players I was up against with this award tonight. I see Semenyo, Gravenberch and Haaland.

“Top players who have had great years, but to be recognised this year, the year I’ve had by the supporters to vote me to win, is yeah, it’s really special.”

Can Liverpool afford to sign Antonie Semenyo and Marc Guehi in January

As mentioned, Semenyo has a release clause worth £65m that will become active in January.

Liverpool, meanwhile, had a £35m offer for Guehi rejected in the summer, but the player will be in the final six months of his contract at Selhurst Park next month.

It remains to be seen if Palace will sell, but if they are open to moving on the centre-back for a reduced fee to avoid losing him for nothing, the Reds, in theory, can afford to do both deals.

Finance expert Adam Williams has told RTK that Liverpool can easily spend £100m in January, but that, of course, will depend on whether FSG are willing to do so.

The Reds are enduring a difficult run of form right now, and it would make sense for fresh legs to be added if results continue to disappoint.
