Chelsea’s Striker Plan: Why Patience May Be Their Best Move

Chelsea want to transfer Liam Delap, looking for a new striker role in Serhou Guirassy. [Blues’ early decision](http://Blues' early decision can make Emegha suffer.) can make Emegha suffer.

Why Chelsea Liam Delap Still Matters in the Squad

Chelsea have many young strikers now. Enzo Maresca has Joao Pedro and Liam Delap today. Marc Guiu is also in the squad. And Emanuel Emegha will join next summer. So, by the new season, Chelsea may have four centre-forwards ready.

Even so, the club keep getting linked with new No. 9s. Fans feel unsure. Some worry that Delap has not performed. He has struggled in the Premier League this season. Had injuries. Not scored yet. Because of this, people think Chelsea may look for an upgrade.

But still, it is too early to judge him. Delap arrived only this summer. He cost around £30m. And he is young. Many players need time to grow. Many strikers need minutes to improve. Selling him now may be rushed. Chelsea must think carefully.

A Possible Upgrade: How Chelsea Could Replace Liam Delap

If Chelsea do decide to upgrade, they may look at Serhou Guirassy. His name has come up many times. And it makes sense. His goal numbers are huge. His performances have impressed big clubs. Last season, he scored 13 Champions League goals in 14 matches. Very few strikers hit numbers like that.

Here are his 2024/25 stats:

Bundesliga: 30 apps, 21 goals, 4 assists

Champions League: 14 apps, 13 goals, 5 assists

DFB-Pokal: 1 app, 0 goals

Club World Cup: 5 apps, 4 goals

Total: 50 apps, 38 goals, 9 assists

These numbers show one clear thing. Guirassy scores goals everywhere. Can be a good addition to Chelsea’s squad for the next summer transfer. The reason why fans are also urging.

However, there is something important. And that is Chelsea’s transfer policy. Since the takeover under Todd Boehly and Clearlake, Chelsea have bought young players. They want to build for the long future. They want players who can grow. Guirassy is 29. He does not fit the style of signings that Chelsea usually makes.

Also, Chelsea already have many forwards. They cannot keep adding more. They need to sell before they buy again. Because of this, signing Guirassy may not be simple.

Chelsea Liam Delap: Why the Club Should Be Careful With Another Signing

Chelsea must think long-term. And they must think slowly. Delap is young. Emegha is even younger. Both have big potential. Both can improve fast with trust and time. If Chelsea buy Guirassy now, they block these young players. And that slows the project down.

Meanwhile, Emegha has not even played one game yet. He deserves a chance. And Delap, even with his struggles, still shows promise. He has pace and strength and has the tools to develop. Many young strikers start slow. But after a season, they improve a lot.

Also, signing Guirassy may give short-term gains but hurt long-term plans. That is risky. That is why Chelsea must think wisely. They must avoid making choices based only on pressure.

Author’s Opinion

In my view, Chelsea must stay calm and avoid emotional decisions. Liam Delap has not scored yet, but young strikers often start slow in the Premier League.

Still, the club cannot ignore reality. If Delap keeps struggling, they will need competition. Emegha is untested, Guiu is raw, and Joao Pedro is not a natural No. 9.

So the best approach is simple: be patient but plan ahead. Give Delap a fair run, judge him at the end of the season, and then rethink the No. 9 role. Chelsea’s Liam Delap can still grow into a top striker — but the next few months will be crucial.
