David Moyes shares whether Everton can actually challenge for Europe this season

The good news keeps on coming at Everton after a fourth win in five games in the Premier League -with a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon sending the Toffees fifth in the table.

Everton had been in superb form prior to the visit of Sean Dyche’s Nottingham Forest side, winning to nil against Fulham, Manchester United and Bournemouth to go from bottom half Premier League consolidation to European aspirations.

A blip against Newcastle United in a 4-1 defeat last Saturday was overturned in a 3-0 win over the Tricky Trees, with strikes from Thierno Barry and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall following Nikola Milenkovic’s early own goal to send fans home with smiles on their faces.

Everton are now fifth in the Premier League table, leaving fans to dream of a continental tour. But manager David Moyes has urged fans not to get carried away, despite the fact that the Toffees are performing well and rank as one of the form sides in the division.

David Moyes urges Everton caution despite incredible Premier League form

With Everton momentarily moving up to fifth in the table, which would be enough to qualify for the Europa League at a minimum come the end of the season, Moyes doesn’t want fans to get carried away.

There are plenty of games to go in the campaign – but the Scot highlighted his ambitions to take his side onto trips abroad in the search for silverware.

Moyes said, after the 3-0 win: “I don’t want to come in here and be negative.

“I want to be positive and try and attempt to get close to Europe.

“We’re not a side yet which will continually win all the games, but we’re making good progress.”

It’s easy for Everton fans to dream big. They’ve not been in such a resounding position since Carlo Ancelotti was manager, and with no European football for eight years, even the slight notion of a continental push will be something that supporters will want to cling on to – especially after such a good run of form under the gaffer.

Everton were regular European qualifiers in David Moyes’ first spell as boss

After just three years at the helm, David Moyes took Everton from relegation woes to Champions League qualifiers, in a huge upturn from March 2002 to May 2005.

Should the Toffees qualify for UEFA’s flagship competition this season, it will mark an almighty 18-month turnaround from Moyes, who became Everton manager after Sean Dyche was sacked in January, lingering just one point above the relegation zone.

Everton qualified for the Champions League once in Moyes’ spell as boss, but from 2007 to 2009, they made the UEFA Cup and Europa League in three successive campaigns, reaching the round of 16 under the lights at Goodison Park.

Although those appearances dried up prior to his Manchester United move, Everton have only qualified for Europe twice in the post-Moyes era – making the round of 16 once again before being dumped out by Dynamo Kyiv under Roberto Martinez in 2015, before exiting the group stage without aplomb in 2017 under Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce.
