Dias was the unlikely man to break the deadlock, firing in from 25 yards after half an hour of stubborn Sunderland resistance.
Gvardiol backed it up a few minutes later with a towering header from a whipped Foden corner.
The points were safe just after the hour when Foden scored his fifth goal in a week by nodding home a delightful rabona cross from Rayan Cherki.
The Blues also held firm at the back, registering our sixth clean sheet of the Premier League season and moving to within two points of leaders Arsenal.
