Martin Keown admits he may have "upset" royalty after casting his Player of the Match vote following Aston Villa’s 2-1 win over Arsenal.

Before Emi Buendia’s dramatic winner in front of the Holte End, Keown had already confirmed Martin Ødegaard as his star of the game.

But after Buendia planted the ball past David Raya with the last kick of the match, HRH Prince William took to social media to question Keown's choice.

"Surely Emi Buendia for Man of the Match?! An incredible game! UTV [Up the Villa]," posted The Prince of Wales on X, formerly Twitter.

Keown, who previously played for both Arsenal and Villa, joked: "I'm really sorry that I've upset royalty, but I actually gave it out - can you believe it? - in the 89th minute. I was a bit early.

"We can unofficially change it. I don't want to be court-martialled," he added.

Villa’s victory over Arsenal was their ninth straight home win, and they have now won nine of their last 10 Premier League matches, with their only defeat in that run coming at Liverpool.

Unai Emery’s side will look to continue their strong form next week when they take on FC Basel in the Europa League on Thursday, followed by West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday.

Arsenal had lost just one of their previous 21 Premier League away games, their only other defeat coming at Anfield.

They travel to Belgium to face Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday.
