College basketball team parts ways with assistant coach, former NBA player

Former NBA player Jeff McInnis, who was working as an assistant men’s basketball coach at College of Charleston, is no longer on staff under head coach Chris Mack.

McInnis has been removed from the school’s website and The Post and Courier reports that Charleston and McInnis have “mutually parted ways.”

A former University of North Carolina star, McInnis had been on staff at Charleston since Chris Mack took over the program ahead of the 2024-25 season.

The Cougars got off to a 4-5 start to this season, including a 23-point loss to Belmont in their most recent game.

Prior to coaching college basketball, Jeff McInnis was the founder of the Team Charlotte AAU organization.

Before that, he spent 11 seasons in the NBA, playing for the Denver Nuggets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trailblazers, Cleveland Cavaliers, New Jersey Nets and Charlotte Bobcats.

For his NBA career, he averaged 9.4 points, 2.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game.

During his time at North Carolina, McInnis earned All-ACC honors twice. He also helped the Tar Heels reach the Final Four.

Mack was excited to have McInnis on staff when he announced the hire ahead of the 2024 season.

“Jeff McInnis is a winner. His love of the game and development of his players over the years in the city of Charlotte is well known,” Mack said at the time. “He was certainly an incredible player, playing for the legendary Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina and parlaying that success to a long NBA career.”
