The final Premier League table, according to Opta’s latest forecast

Manchester City moved to within two points of league leaders Arsenal after a comprehensive 3-0 victory over high-flying Sunderland.

It was a very victory in the contest of this season’s title race as Arsenal slipped up in a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa after Emi Buendia’s last-gasp winner in the 95th minute of the contest.

Villa, who failed to win any of their opening five matches, are now up to third in the league table after a dramatic period. Meanwhile, Liverpool, who at one stage had a five point lead at the top of the table are now down to eighth position after a shock 3-3 draw with Leeds United. Manchester United are the last team to play this matchday as they gear up for anaway trip to basement side Wolves. Ahead of that contest, we take a look at the latest Opta supercomputer to see how the final league table is expected to unfold.

The Premier League title race

The data experts expect Arsenal to win their first league title in 22 years despite this weekend’s defeat to Aston Villa.

Opta backs the Gunners to pick up 80 points in total, giving them a seven point advantage on Manchester City, who have been placed as runners-up with a points tally of 73.

The supercomputer expects Aston Villa to finish in third, which would mark their highest league finish Alex Ferguson’s predecessor Ron Atkinson led them to second in the inaugural league season. Meanwhile, Chelsea are expected to pip Liverpool to fourth position with Crystal Palace finishing in sixth place to secure another season on the continent.

Where are Man Utd expected to finish?

United slumped to 15th place last term, marking their worst league campaign since 1974. They’ve shown signs of improvement this term, but not enough to convince Opta’s supercomputer that they’ll finish in a European position.

The data experts instead have the Red Devils in ninth position with 55 points, six behind Liverpool in fifth, who are expected to secure a Champions League spot due to England’s strong co-efficient rating.
