Carlo Ancelotti has vowed to return to Everton and support his former club in a game at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium home. The Italian, who is the most successful manager in the history of European football having lifted the Champions League five times, spent 18 months in charge of the Blues, having replaced Marco Silva in December 2019.
The following season – played mostly behind closed doors because of the global coronavirus pandemic – Everton found themselves second in the table on Boxing Day.
But in a campaign in which they won away at Liverpool and Arsenal yet lost nine home games, they slumped to finish 10th position.
Just 10 days after the Blues finished the season with a 5-0 thrashing at champions Manchester City, Ancelotti quit Goodison Park to return to Real Madrid.
Now 66, Ancelotti is coach of the Brazil national team and joined fellow former Everton managers Roberto Martinez (Portugal) and Ronald Koeman (Netherlands) at the draw for next summer’s World Cup finals at Washington DC on Friday.
Speaking in an interview with Ally McCoist for TNT Sports, Ancelotti was asked how he enjoyed his time at Everton.
He said: “I loved the period at Everton. It was a difficult period because it was Covid there, but I have a good memory of the environment there and I’m looking always to the result of Everton.
“I know that Moyes now is doing a fantastic job. They have a new stadium, and one day I will be there to support Everton in their new stadium.”
Just over a year ago, when Ancelotti’s then Real Madrid side were playing Liverpool in a Champions League group game at Anfield, there was a rumour that the man from Reggio Emilia had been given a personal tour of Everton’s future home on the Mersey waterfront.
However, the ECHO understood that such claims were wide of the mark and a senior club official said: “We think he might have walked down from the Titanic and had a look under his own steam... but to my knowledge, he definitely did not have an official tour.”
