The injury picked up by Liam Delap on Saturday is a big blow to Chelsea because it takes away Enzo Maresca’s preferred option up front.
But let’s face it, Delap wasn’t in great form or pulling up any trees. Even if he hadn’t got injured, there would have been calls to replace him in the starting team.

Marc Guiu is the other natural striker in the squad and he replaced Delap. He certainly matches him in terms of enthusiastically running around. But Guiu’s total lack of goal threat is a major worry if he’s going to play regularly in the next few weeks. He has precisely 0 Premier League goals in his career.
Stats site FotMob have him down as having a 16.7% shot on target rate. He averages 0.7 per game. Delap had almost double that at 1.3 – and even he was struggling to score.
Still, Guiu is going to get his chances now regardless of the stats, and all he can do is try to improve those numbers. This could yet be the making of him – but it could also be the breaking of him if it still doesn’t work out.
In other news…
Moises Caicedo has been brilliant for Chelsea this season and we will need him tonight. His red card against Arsenal cost his team and cost his average rating for the season on stats sites – another Blue has now overtaken him as top rated on the season.
December’s rapid fire run of games gives us a great chance to climb the table – but it can also go the other way too. They have tough games coming up and a worst case scenario could see them really fall down the table in the weeks to come.
