Everton will play in the FA Cup third round once again in January, aiming to dispel over three decades-worth of frustration in the competition to finally take the biggest domestic cup trophy in world football.
Everton will enter the FA Cup third round alongside 63 other teams including their 19 rival Premier League clubs, aiming to get through the third, fourth and fifth rounds to make the quarter-finals.
Should the Toffees win at that stage, it will see manager David Moyes manage a game at Wembley for the first time in cup competitions since his loss to Liverpool in 2012 – having only taken charge of the Community Shield for Manchester United against Wigan in his first competitive game at the Red Devils.
And, the Toffees will have a tough test at home to a Premier League side awaiting them in just over a month’s time.

Everton will take on Sunderland in the FA Cup third round
Everton were ball number 15 in the FA Cup draw on Monday evening.
And, when they were drawn against number 37, it means a home tie against in-form Premier League outfit Sunderland in what is one of the tougher challenges of the round.

Everton’s last FA Cup clash against the Black Cats was a 2-0 win in a quarter-final replay in 2012, sending them to Wembley under David Moyes – which, as aforementioned, was his final Wembley appearance in the competition.

With Sunderland currently just one point behind the Toffees, as well as formerly being managed by the Scottish gaffer, it promises to be a tasty clash on the cards at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Everton have not fared well in the FA Cup in recent years
The FA Cup has been an unforgiving competition to Everton in recent years.
It’s been four years since the club reached the quarter-finals of the competition, where they were beaten 4-0 by Crystal Palace in 2022, whilst a 2-0 defeat by Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the 2020-21 campaign saw them miss out on a Wembley trip.
It’s been 10 years since Everton last played at the national stadium for an FA Cup semi-final clash, losing to Manchester United, and we’re closing in on 17 years since Everton’s last final.

Having been beaten by rivals Liverpool at the semi-final stage in 2012, their last final was the 2009 competition, where they went 1-0 up against Chelsea after 25 seconds through Louis Saha – though goals from Didier Drogba and former boss Frank Lampard turned the game around in heartbreaking circumstances.
The Toffees haven’t won a trophy at Wembley since their Community Shield hoist in 1995, which they qualified for by winning the FA Cup against Manchester United just a few months before.
This season could be the year when Everton finally end their 31-year duck in the hopes of a major honour.
