On Spanish radio program Radio Estadio Noche (Onda Cero), Vicente Ortega focused on the deteriorating relationship between Xabi Alonso’s tactical demands and the players’ execution on the pitch. For him, the disconnect is obvious and growing.
“What is clear is that the players are not comfortable on the pitch. The players do not understand, do not accept, or do not want to play the idea that the coach wants,” he said.
Madrid’s recent run of results reflects that gap: disjointed pressing, poor spacing, and a midfield that often splits in transition. Ortega believes it’s a fundamental mismatch between the squad’s habits and the tactics or strategy being imposed.
Until Alonso can align the group behind his plan, or adjust the system to the squad’s strengths, Madrid will continue to look uncertain and reactive. The coach is attempting to do what no Madrid coach has done before: implement a succesful pressing scheme.
