Giannis Antetokounmpo Pushed for Blockbuster Trade to East Contender This Summer: Report

The drama surrounding Milwaukee Bucks superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and a potential exit from his current team is still riding high.

Trade rumors surrounding Antetokounmpo have exploded after he scrubbed all Bucks references from his Instagram and Twitter accounts last week, sending the NBA world into a frenzy. The 31-year-old superstar is currently recovering from a severe calf injury that is expected to sideline him for roughly four weeks.

As Antetokounmpo deals with both the injury and the growing speculation about his future, more information has surfaced. According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, the rumors that the two-time MVP had interest in being traded to the New York Knicks this past summer were indeed true.

“It’s true: There’s a strong belief leaguewide that Antetokounmpo desires one destination above all the rest in the event that he actually does fully ask out someday.

“New York.

“After some further calls, I can confirm that the Knicks - as well as playing in Madison Square Garden - were the specific “temptation” that Giannis himself publicly acknowledged on Bucks Media Day as an outcome he pondered during the summer.

“I’ve even heard that the rowdy fanbase gatherings outside the arena following playoff victories that the Knicks are known for have resonated given his natural fondness for the emotionally charged support so prevalent for basketball and soccer clubs throughout Europe. The wait for a championship at MSG, of course, has now stretched longer than Milwaukee’sown 50-year title drought that the Antetokounmpo-led Bucks brought to a halt in July 2021.”

Many view the Knicks as a potential favorite to land Antetokounmpo, but doing so would come at a steep cost - and they're limited in what they can offer.

If New York were to acquire him, they would immediately lose the ability to trade any of their own first-round picks due to Stepien Rule restrictions. That leaves the Knicks with only swap rights and a single tradable first-round pick from the Washington Wizards, which is top-eight protected.

Antetokounmpo has been more vocal, now more than ever, about winning and winning at a high level. The Bucks have not provided them with that since they last reached the top of the 2020-21 season.

Since then, the Bucks have yet to sniff a conference final appearance, let alone a Finals appearance. The nine-time All-Star is serious about winning, and now that he's in his 30s with an increasingly extensive injury history, his window to contend for a championship as the No. 1 or even No. 2 option may be beginning to close.
