Phil Jones says Chelsea are “one or two players short” of challenging for the title

Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones believes that Chelsea are one or two players short of challenging for the title.

He’s not alone in that opinion either, it seems to be a regular view of many pundits, former players, and the Chelsea fan base right now.

EXCLUSIVE! Chelsea have THREE Premier League centre midfielders on the radar – two they would LOVE to sign!

There aren’t many who ever really believed that Chelsea would win the Premier League title this season, but there are many who believe that they are getting closer and closer to challenging to do just that.

Next season is the season that they believe Chelsea will be true title challengers, but of course, only time will tell if those predictions turn out having any weight to them.

Chelsea’s recent form has continued to be very up and down and inconsistent. After thrashing Barcelona and playing very well against Arsenal a couple of weeks back, there was a dull 0-0 draw against Bournemouth on Saturday, and a 3-1 defeat to Leeds United last week to bring them back down to earth again.

Jones, who of course is not longer playing football, has been impressed with Chelsea.

Speaking to Sports Illustrated this week, Jones said:

“I think they’ve quietly gone about the business. So I think it’s quite a nice place to be at in terms of Maresca, what he’s thinking. I like the players they’ve got. I think he’s built a really good team there. I like his ideas.

“I still think they’re the one or two players short on being really challenging for the title, but I think, you know, slowly but surely. I think next year they’ll have a real good challenge if they recruit well.”
