Harrison Armstrong says his fate at Preston North End is out of his hands amid concerns Everton could recall the midfielder in January.
The former Derby County loanee scored at the weekend in a 1-1 draw against Wrexham as the Lilywhites continued their excellent start to the season.
Last week, Everton boss David Moyes said he hoped Armstrong would see out the season at Deepdale, but would assess the situation again in the New Year.
Preston would be loath to lose the talented teenager who has helped them to the top six of the Championship, with the club dreaming of a promotion challenge.
And Armstrong, who excelled during his loan spell with Derby last season, says that while he would love to stay at the club, it is a matter that is not in his control.
“Well, I think it’s out of my hands," he said.
"Whatever decision is made I just hope it’s for the best for my development and I would love to stay here and contribute to the team and hopefully we can get in amongst the play-offs
“I’m just leaving it in the hands of the people who control it.”
Armstrong impressed as he helped Derby win their relegation battle last season and he scored a terrific goal in a 3-2 win at Plymouth.
He had been the subject of interest again from the Rams in the summer but Derby made the decision to add another attacker to take their last loan spot.
Armstrong subsequently moved to Preston where he has been given a more advanced position from which he is clearly reaping the benefits.
Heckingbottom said: "I've just been saying he plays a different role probably for us, than he did at Derby last year, with and without the ball.
"He'll find himself high up the pitch and be a lot more aggressive. I think that really suits him. He's a player who's 18 and already having a big impact on Championship games.
"One, because of his talent, but probably more so because of his personality on the pitch and his drive to win. He really affects games positively and that's his gift, that's his talent… and he's got so much more to learn as well.
"He should get even better, so I think he's going to be a top player."
