Chelsea’s clash with Atalanta will see them bring up 100 away games in Europe, as they look to strengthen their grip on a place in the top eight of the Champions League.

Enzo Maresca will be without Cole Palmer and Liam Delap, however can utilise Moises Caicedo, who is suspended for Premier League games at the moment.

Chelsea have won 41 of their 99 previous away games in Europe, boasting the best record of any English side already in their first 100.

The Blues have provided some memorable moments in European football, and some of their finest results have come in tough circumstances away from home.

The Chelsea Chronicle have ranked the club’s top five performances away from home in Europe.

Chelsea’s top five away performances in the Champions League

Real Madrid 2-3 Chelsea – 12 April 2022

Oh, what could have been.

Chelsea weren’t given much hope after losing the first leg 3-1, however put in a stellar performance to lead 3-0 on the night.

They were forced to extra time after Rodrygo converted from a brilliant Luka Modric pass, and then Karim Benzema broke Chelsea hearts with his goal.

The defending champions were knocked out of the competition on this night, however produced a performance that Thomas Tuchel and his players could be proud of.

UEFA Champions League 2017-18 - Atletico de Madrid vs Chelsea FC

Atletico Madrid 1-2 Chelsea – 27 September 2017

In the group stages of the 2017/18 Champions League campaign, Chelsea faced the tough task of taking on Atletico Madrid in their new stadium.

Antonio Conte’s Premier League champions trailed, but levelled proceedings thanks to Alvaro Morata, who had replaced new Atletico striker Diego Costa in the starting side.

It was fellow striker Michy Batshuayi who found the winner off the bench with the last kick of the game, as Chelsea became the first away side to win at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea – 6 April 2004

Arsenal were on their way to becoming the invincible champions of the Premier League, however saw their run in the Champions League come to an end at the hands of Chelsea.

The sides drew 1-1 at Stamford Bridge, and the Blues fell behind in the first half of the quarter-final second leg.

Frank Lampard levelled proceedings, before a rare Wayne Bridge goal with three minutes to go sent the Blues to the semi-finals.

Liverpool 1-3 Chelsea – 8 April 2009

Chelsea’s ongoing rivalry with Liverpool in the Champions League added another chapter in 2009, and the Blues laid down a serious marker in the quarter-final first leg.

Branislav Ivanovic scored his first and second goals for the club from corners to give them the lead, before a scintillating move eventually allowed Didier Drogba to extend their lead.

A thrilling 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge played out in the second leg, seeing Chelsea get one over on one of their fiercest European rivals.

Barcelona 2-2 Chelsea – 24 April 2012

The greatest away performance Chelsea have ever produced, and it didn’t even end in a victory on the night.

After scraping a 1-0 win in the semi-final first leg against Barcelona, the Blues’ biggest nightmares were coming true when they were 2-0 down at the Nou Camp, with John Terry sent off.

A wonderful Ramires chip goal and a Fernando Torres dagger in the final moments bookended one of the greatest defensive performances in Champions League history.

The result sent Chelsea to the final against Bayern Munich, where they won their first Champions League trophy after a penalty shootout victory.
