Garnacho on the reasons why Maresca is always going to pick him ahead of Gittens

Alejandro Garnacho has been working his way into the plans of Enzo Maresca over the course of this season since signing from Manchester United in the summer, and speaking to the Chelsea official website yesterday he discussed what he was able to offer this team.

Despite being a tricky South American winger, Garnacho is really known for his work rate, and according to him that’s a key part of his game:

“Today, in modern football, defending is an important part of the game because now every team you face is strong and you have to defend with everyone,” Garnacho said.

“I know I have to defend if I want to play, the manager told me it was like this. So I just try to do the work he asks. With the ball, he told me to just go with it, and if I lose it recover it.

“So I have to help the team defensively also, but that is just a part of football now.”

Those qualities will always keep him relevant for the manager, even when he’s not in form. Jamie Gittens has plenty of talent, but it’s hard to see Maresca picking him over Garnacho in any game where Chelsea are expected to be on the back foot at times.

In other news…

One person who wasn’t in the session today was Cole Palmer – but we’ve been assured this was all totally normal. He’s just being managed on his return from injury, and we already know when we will next see him in the team.

One player who will have been training extra hard today is Marc Guiu – with Liam Delap now set to miss a couple of months with an injury, Guiu is back in the frame for more starts and more minutes. Let’s hope he can turn that into more goals.
