Stephen Curry #30 of the Golden State Warriors celebrates after a three point shot in the fourth quarter against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on March 04, 2025 in New York City.
Throughout his career, Stephen Curry has proven to be one of the greatest players in NBA history, becoming the league’s all-time three-point leader and winning four championships with the Golden State Warriors.
However, Curry almost never went to the Bay Area, as multiple teams had the chance to add the guard in the 2009 Draft. While the Minnesota Timberwolves are consistently criticized for picking two point guards over Curry, the New York Knicks just missed out on the generational star, as he was selected one pick before they took Jordan Hill eighth overall.
Speaking on his podcast, former Knicks star Carmelo Anthony made a bold claim: ifCurry had been drafted by New York, he would have led them to a title.

“We winnin’ the championship.”
IF Steph Curry was drafted by the Knicks, Melo believes they woulda won NBA titles together 👀
“In ’09, ifhe’s drafted by the Knicks, then they have a centerpiece, they have the corner piece of a generation,” Anthony said, before then being asked how the team would perform after the ex-Denver Nugget star arrived in The Big Apple. “We winnin’ the championship.”
Obviously, that never happened, and the Knicks didn’t make it out of the second round with Anthony leading the team.Additionally, Curry is now the longest-tenured playerstill in the league today, playing all of his now 18 NBA seasons with the Warriors, with the expectation that he’ll finish his career with them as well.
Carmelo Anthony On Steph Curry With The Knicks
While Anthony did make it clear that a core group of him, Curry, and Amar’e Stoudemire would have found glory and won four straight playoff rounds, the11th most prolific scorer in league history also said Curry wouldhave likely had a short tenure in New York.
Wheninitially askedaboutwhetherthe point guard would have been drafted by the Knicks, Anthonyhad another bold claim.
“Steph is out of New York in four years,” Anthony said, referring to the immense pressure of playing in the country’s largest media market.
Though it’s consistently the Timberwolves who were clowned for taking Ricky Rubio and Johnny Flynn with consecutive picks right before Curry, the Knicks had the chance to move up one spot and take the shooter. However, they didn’t and selected Hill instead. He playedwith the team for only 25 games before being traded, and he averaged more than 10 points per gameonce in his career, before retiring in 2017.
Regardless of all that, New York now has its superstar point guard in Jalen Brunson. He, alongside Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, and Mitchell Robinson, led the Knicks to their first conference Finals appearance in 25 years. While they may have already gotten a title if Currywas drafted, having Brunson now isn’t the worst consolation prize, even if hedid arrive more than a decade after they missed out on the former.
Steph Curry Injury Update
Though in his 18th season, Curry has put in numerous strong performances for the Warriorsthis season. While the rest of the team has been marred with controversy and inconsistency, Curry is quietly putting up one of the best years of his career, despite being one of the oldest players in the NBA.

Steph Curry is the oldest point guard in NBA history with back-to-back 45-point games.
But that has been put on pause,as the starhas missed the last few games for Golden Statewith a quad injury. He had already sat out a few games earlier in the yearwith an illness, but has now missed five consecutive contests, and still doesn’t have adirect timeline for a return.
However, a recent update on his injurycould signal a returncoming soon.
“The Warriors provided an official update on Curry’s rehab on Sunday, stating that the 37-year-old is making ‘good progress’ and has started individual on-court workouts in the Bay Area and could participate in segments of the team’s practice back home on Wednesday,” NBC Sports Bay Area reported.
Though he’s their most important player, the Warriors have won back-to-back games without Curry and a shorthanded roster overall.Yetstill, that doesn’t overshadow the issues within the organization, specifically with Jonathan Kuminga, as the latest news signals he could be on a ticking clock before being traded in a little over amonth’s time.
