'Mo Salah is acting like a stroppy little child– don't expect a statue on your way out'

Mo Salah has seemingly turned his back on the club, which means he's basically turned his back on the fans and the city as well, the Daily Star's lifelong Liverpool fan Adam Cailler explains

There's an old, well-known adage that states a footballer is “never bigger than the club” he plays for. For the last three days, the footballing world has been ablaze with the one-sided slanging match between Mohammed Salah and Liverpool Football Club.

He claims someone at the club wants him out, and is basically one fishing rod away from putting on a tinfoil hat. I have been a Liverpool fan since I was six – 30 years overall – and have seen hundreds, if not thousands of players come and go during that time.

We've had our fair share of . . . idiots . . . from El Hadji-Diouf to Luis 'cannibal'” Suarez, and we've even seen home-grown legends turn their backs on the club and leave (hello, Trent Alexander-Arnold).

This latest incident smacks of disrespect to the manager, club and even the fans.

We've also had some of the world's worst footballers don the kit, such as Paul Konchesky and pretty much anyone Roy Hodgson signed. But what we've never had is what we're currently being subjected to as fans right now – a bone-fide legend turning on the club, attacking the manager and acting as if he's the one who has been wronged.

Do not get me wrong, Mo Salah is and always will be a legend for what he's done on the pitch. He can be spoken about in the same breath as giants like Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen, Robbie Fowler and Steven Gerrard.

But off the pitch, he has form for outbursts and child-like strops, and his latest rant is just another chapter of that.

However, this latest incident smacks of disrespect to the manager, club and even the fans. Liverpool have always been more than just a football club.

He'll be missed on the pitch

We're a family, and if you come for one of us you come for all of us – the city of Liverpool is very much the same, as shown by the solidarity often expressed between the club and rivals Everton on many occasions.

Mo has now been dropped for the Champions League game against Inter Milan, and might very well never play for the club again.

Will I be mourning the loss? Given this season's form, where an experienced, world class player such as him should be the one inspiring the players to do better – no, no I won't.

A life-long red

A life-long red

Players come and go, and if this is the sword Salah wants to die on, then so be it. Go and enjoy your millions in Saudi or the MLS (the rumours claim he might go to San Diego FC... a side with just one single year of history).

But don't come crying to Liverpool fans when we don't build you a statue or give a single you-know-what when you leave with your stroppy tail between your legs.
