Liverpool found a much-needed win in Europe as they bounced back from a week of contention to hand Arne Slot a win that will buy him some time.
The Dutch coach has been under intense pressure in recent weeks and the Mohamed Salah controversy has not made things any easier.
As expected, Salah was dropped from the squad in the wake of his ill-timed quotes to the press after the 3-3 draw with Leeds United on Saturday.
Yet, the focus was on the squad that was selected and the Reds showed up in a manner that has been sorely lacking all season. The team selected showed a level of composure and fight not seen for quite some time.
Alisson Becker – 8/10
Liverpool are happy to have their Brazilian shot-stopper back in between the sticks and he did not disappoint. A string of important sides held Inter Milan at bay to protect a clean sheet that restores their hopes of securing a stronger than deserved finish in the Champions League group stage.
Andy Robertson – 7/10
A strong if not spectacular, performance from the vice-captain enabled the Reds to operate with stability on the left wing. While no longer in peak physical shape at the age of 31, his experience was vital to deny a team that reached the final of least season’s tournament.
Virgil van Dijk – 8/10
A near-perfect performance from van Dijk. Whereas the Dutchman has been playing angry of late, he looked to be back to his assured best.
Ibrahima Konate – 7/10
By far his best performance in recent months. Konate has been guilty of not just playing poorly but giving away needless goals, including the penalty away to Leeds last time out. Up against his compatriot Marcus Thuram, Konate was strong and tidy. More of this from the Parisian will help Liverpool massively this month.
Joe Gomez – 7/10
Another reliable performance from Gomez. The Englishman is truly unlucky to have had as many injuries as he has. Every time he is fit enough to play, he is a valuable player.
Ryan Gravenberch – 7/10
The Dutch midfielder was much more like the midfielder of last season as he split the Inter Milan engine room with his slalom runs and effortless turns. While he has not been at his sparkling best this season, he is always on the cusp of a top performance.
Curtis Jones – 8/10
Game by game this season, Jones is elevating his game. Whenever Liverpool were in need of an outlet in tight spaces, the Scouser was there to be found.
Against a team with top midfielders, he stood above his opposition.
Alexis Mac Allister – 6/10
While by no means a bad performance, Mac Allister looked to be below the physical demands of the game, as he has all season.
Dominik Szoboszlai – 9/10 (Man of the Match)
What a player. By far the best player at the club this season, Szoboszlai was once again the best player on the field. His goal was the cherry on the cake and handed Liverpool a vital win. It makes one wonder where the Reds would be this season without him.
Szoboszlai is now tied with Ekitike with nine goal contributions this season. Incredible from a player covering more ground than any other Liverpool star.
Alexander Isak – 5/10
Invisible at times. Isak is really struggling to find his feet and often seems to be unable to find space for a team not playing on the counter, as he grew accustomed to with Newcastle United.
Hugo Ekitike – 7/10
The Frenchman found a lot of space where his attacking partner failed to. On another night, he could have had a goal, but what impresses the most is his constant search for space to receive the ball, whether in behind or dropping deep.
