“It’s quite bad” – Enzo Maresca provides worrying injury update after Atalanta defeat

Enzo Maresca is hopeful Wesley Fofana will be available for Saturday’s game against Everton after picking up an eye injury against Atalanta.

Chelsea’s poor start to December continued as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat in the Champions League, and are now on a four match winless run.

Joao Pedro gave the Blues the lead with a close range finish, but poor defending in the second half allowed the hosts to score twice, with Charles De Ketelaere scoring the winner.

Enzo Maresca update on Wesley Fofana

Maresca made five changes to the side which drew with Bournemouth, and as expected Fofana found himself on the bench.

However, the Frenchman was introduced at half time in place of Trevoh Chalobah, but had to be withdrawn again after taking a boot to the face.

It was visible that Fofana had a problem with his eye, and he could no longer continue in yet more bad luck for the 24-year-old.

Fofana should have defended better for the equaliser, but has been key in Chelsea’s recent defensive improvement, and Maresca has provided an update on his eye.

“He had a problem with his eye,” he told his post-match press conference.

“It’s quite bad. He struggled to see a little bit but hopefully he can be available for Saturday.”

Chelsea’s struggles continue

A change of competition didn’t provide a change of result for the Blues, and they now haven’t won in all competitions since beating Barcelona last month.

More worrying has been the manner of the defeats, with Chelsea turning in some terrible performances, and being nowhere near the level required.

The seemingly annual December slump has set in early, and Maresca is up against it to turn things round, with a tricky game against Everton up next on Saturday at Stamford Bridge, with Newcastle and Aston Villa to follow.
