Reigning NBA and NBA Finals MVP [Shai Gilgeous-Alexander](https://www.tsn.ca/nba/player/shai-gilgeous-alexander/1067856) has won the 2025 Northern Star Award.

Gilgeous-Alexander was chosen as the winner Tuesday of the award, which is given to the top Canadian athlete of the year as voted by sports journalists from across the country. It marks the second time he’s won the award, having been selected in 2023 as well.

The 27-year-old point guard became the second Canadian in NBA history to win league MVP in May, joining Steve Nash, and led the [Oklahoma City Thunder](https://www.tsn.ca/nba/team-page/oklahoma-city-thunder/25) to the franchise’s second NBA title (1979 Seattle SuperSonics) just weeks later.

The Hamilton, Ont. native led the NBA with an average of 32.7 points during the regular season in 2024-25 and averaged 29.9 points per game in the playoffs, being named the Western Conference Finals MVP as well.

Gilgeous-Alexander has picked up where he left off this season, leading the Thunder to a historic 23-1 start to the season as he averages 32.8 points in his bid to repeat as NBA MVP.

The three-time All-Star was also awarded best male athlete at the 2025 ESPYs in July.
