Szoboszlai’s 88th-Minute Penalty Seals Liverpool Win Over Inter

Dominik Szoboszlai scored a penalty to give Liverpool a 1-0 away win over Inter Milan in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday in the sixth round of matches. With the Hungarian player’s goal, the Reds moved up to eighth place on the table claiming three points.

The captain of the Hungarian national team played the entire match in Milan, while Milos Kerkez sat on the bench and did not come on as a substitute. Inter Milan’s Hakan Calhanoglu and Yann Bisseck both got injured in the first half hour and had to be substituted. Although Ibrahima Konaté scored in the 32nd minute, the referee disallowed Liverpool’s goal for handball.

Then, in the 88th minute, Alessandro Bastoni pulled Hugo Ekitike back by his shirt inside the box. After the VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty, which Szoboszlai converted with his right foot into the top right corner.

With the win, the English champions moved up to eighth place.

Liverpool coach Arne Slot said it was too early to say how significant this victory would be for the season, but emphasized that the result in Milan was essential given the difficult matches ahead. He highlighted Inter’s impressive home form and called the 1-0 victory a remarkable result, comparable to Liverpool’s other outstanding achievements, such as their victories against Real Madrid and Arsenal.

The Liverpool coach praised Szoboszlai’s adaptability this season, noting that he has consistently delivered despite being asked to play in multiple roles.

What is also special with him is how much he runs in a game,” the coach pointed to his player’s exceptional physical output, noting that Szoboszlai is one of the few players to have featured in four matches over the past 10 days.

The top eight teams from the eight-round regular season advance directly to the quarterfinals, while teams ranked 9-24 play each other for a spot in the last 16, with the bottom 12 teams being eliminated. The teams will battle it out in February for a place in the quarterfinals, with the matches taking place on March 10-11 and 17-18. The quarter-final matches will be held on April 7-8 and 14-15, and the semi-final matches will take place on April 28-29 and May 5-6.

The final will be held at the Puskás Arena in Budapest on May 30 at 6 p.m.
