Jamie Carragher apologises to Mohamed Salah as Liverpool icon changes his tune

Jamie Carragher issued a public apology to Mohamed Salah on live TV after his scathing comments about the Liverpool forward. During his appearance on Monday Night Football, Carragher labelled Salah's explosive post-match statements following Saturday's stalemate at Leeds United as 'a disgrace' and questioned whether the Egyptian ace would turn out for the club again.

The former Liverpool defender stated: "I think whenever Mo Salah stops in a mixed zone, which he's done four times in eight years, it's choreographed with him and his agent to cause maximum damage and strengthen his own position. He did that 12 months ago and I called him out on this show about it and he played on the heartstrings of Liverpool supporters. Liverpool were top of the league, he'd scored the winning goal at Southampton, that was the time to come out and put pressure on the Liverpool ownership. So for the rest of the season you've got banners in the crowd, 'Give Mo his dough.'

"He chose this weekend to do this, he's waited, I think, for a bad result for Liverpool. Concede a last minute goal, supporters, the manager, everyone at the club feels like they are in the gutter and he's chose that time to go for the manager and to maybe try and get him sacked."

On Tuesday, Carragher appeared on CBS Sports to run the rule over the Champions League fixtures alongside Micah Richards, Thierry Henry and host Kate Scott.

Following their discussion about Salah's controversial remarks, Richards confronted Carragher directly, saying: "Would you like to apologise to Mo, and just say sorry for any disrespect?

"It just comes from passion, you're a fan, go on, just say it down the lens."

Carragher responded: "Mo, I apologise I've upset you. I love you as the Liverpool player, but you just need to behave yourself off the pitch."

Richards acknowledged: "That's fair, that looked very genuine," before offering Carragher a handshake.

The Egyptian forward was notably absent from Liverpool's triumph against Inter Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday evening, having been omitted from Arne Slot's squad following his public statements.

However, the Reds manager later offered Salah a chance to save his Anfield career, provided the winger feels like he has made a mistake.

He said: "The first thing should be, does the player think he's made a mistake? I haven't said I'm not going to talk to him.

"The next question is, should the initiative come from me or from him? That's another question to answer.

"But the focus tonight should be, for example Virgil [van Dijk] because the fans are singing about him. But not only Virgil. Ibou Konate has had a few difficult moments recently but he played an outstanding game today against two very good strikers."
