Joe Cole has theory for what is behind Chelsea’s regular dips in form in December

For the second campaign in a row, Chelsea’s form is drastically tailing off as we approach the festive period of the season.

After defeat away against Atalanta, the Blues are now four games without a win in all competitions, and Enzo Maresca needs to find a solution to quickly restore supporters’ faith in their season.

A number of individuals have performed poorly during this particular slump in form. Enzo Fernandez has struggled to have any influence on proceedings of late.

There is a deeper issue at hand when it comes to the fact Chelsea have not won away in the Champions League since 2022, but at this point they will take a victory in any competition to begin to turn around their form.

Joe Cole thinks lack of experience is being Chelsea’s December dips

Someone has to step up for the Blues, although club legend Joe Cole believes that they are lacking the experienced heads required to navigate them through tough runs of form, which have occurred in the last two seasons under Maresca.

He said to TNT Sports: “I look at the Barcelona and Arsenal performance, the team got praised to the hill, rightly so. And then I go back to the next phase, when you go to Elland Road, of course the coaching staff will have done their homework, but it’s something about having an experienced person in the fire.

“They have to learn to deal with those moments. You can’t be brittle. You need to be a bit more consistent, and that’s the next stage for this group.”

Chelsea’s oldest outfield player is Tosin Adarabioyo, however his personal poor form saw him not even in the squad when the Blues drew 0-0 with Bournemouth.

Chelsea’s tough end to 2025

The Blues still have five games to play in 2025, not allowing Maresca the time he would ideally like to get his players back on track.

Their next game is at home to Everton, before a trip to Cardiff in the EFL Cup and Newcastle in the Premier League.

2025 ends with home games against high-flying Aston Villa and Bournemouth, and it remains to be seen how much impact some players will have due to their fitness levels.

Cole Palmer was left at home for Chelsea’s trip to Atalanta, but will be heavily relied on as he continues his return from a groin injury which kept him out since September.
