Chelsea criticised by Atalanta goalscorer who knew his side would equalise after going one goal down

Chelsea’s poor run continues, with the Blues losing 2-1 to Atalanta in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Enzo Maresca’s side entered the game having failed to win any of their previous three matches.

They had a good chance to end that streak after Joao Pedro put them in front in the first half. However, goals from Charles De Ketelaere and Gianluca Scamacca saw Atalanta complete a second-half comeback.

Gianluca Scamacca tells Chelsea they didn’t deserve their lead

Scamacca has been very honest about Chelsea’s performance, claiming that the Club World Cup winners should not have gone in front.

In a post-match interview, which has been shared by Atalanta’s official club website, the striker said: “Looking back, especially at the end of the first half, we knew their lead wasn’t deserved. The game was very balanced and we were playing well. So we knew, we were sure, that we just had to stay on that path and a goal would come.”

In contrast, Atalanta manager Raffaele Palladino has been much kinder with his words about Chelsea.

Palladino described Chelsea as a “very strong” team and thought they brought a lot of “technical quality and pace” to the pitch.

It could not stop Scamacca and De Ketelaere from downing them, though, as their poor run continues. After beating Barcelona 3-0 and drawing with Arsenal, Maresca will be frustrated with recent results.

Gianluca Scamacca’s total number of shots against Chelsea — Enzo Maresca will be disappointed

It is not a surprise that Scamacca was able to score against Chelsea. The Blues gave him plenty of opportunities before his substitution in the 72nd minute.

As per Sofascore, the 26-year-old had an xG of 0.92 after taking a total of five shots. Chelsea also had a hard time dealing with his teammate De Ketelaere.

De Ketelaere, who scored Atalanta’s winner, was the player who set up Scamacca. He created one big chance and registered three key passes.

Next up for Chelsea is a Premier League fixture against Everton. If Maresca’s team defend as they did against Scamacca and De Ketelaere, Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye will punish them.
