Virgil van Dijk will not tell Mo Salah to apologise: ‘That’s for the club to deal with’

Virgil van Dijk has stressed it is not his place to determine if Mo Salah has to apologise after his recent comments, with the captain insisting any talks he has will stay behind closed doors.

Salah was left to watch Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Inter on Merseyside after his comments over the weekend, with the club and Arne Slot determining it as the best course of action.

There is no shortage of debate as to what comes next, though Slot appeared steadfast that the Egyptian must come speak to him to clear the air, and not the other way around.

As for Van Dijk’s view on any apology, he told Amazon Prime he is not in a position to speak on whether one should be given or not.

“I don’t think I’m the one to speak about if someone has to apologise for anything,” he said.

“I think it’s him airing his feelings over the last couple of days, and that’s something that the club has to deal with, and obviously we as well.

“But if I look at the dressing room, the day after, I think nothing really has changed.

“The task was that we have responsibility, not only to ourselves, but to the whole football club and to all the fans in the world to perform.

“So the focus was there, nothing else. Nothing has changed. And he trained as well.”

Clarence Seedorf, who was pitch side talking to Van Dijk, made it clear he thought Salah “should apologise” before asking if Van Dijk would help play a role in bringing peace again.

“The reality also is that Mo is going to Africa on the weekend,” Van Dijk replied. “I’ve known Mo for such a long time, we’re good friends. We’ve been through highs and lows.

“He’s been a big part of the success I’ve had at the club, and I’ve been a big part of his success.

“We are all part of Liverpool Football Club’s success as well. We speak [but] those type of things will stay indoors, as it should.

“We, as a team and players, have to brace ourselves and be ready for the outside noise. That’s the only thing we have to be ready for. That’s the only thing I’d encourage the players to do.”
