Chelsea could now be without seven players against Everton after new 'problem'

Inter Milan 0-1 Liverpool: Arne Slot press conference

Chelsea team news ahead of the Premier League clash against Everton at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are sweating on a key defender ahead of their clash against Everton.

The Toffees travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday (15.00 GMT) full of confidence. A 3-0 triumph over Nottingham Forest last weekend was a fourth victory in their past five matches. David Moyes’ side are seventh in the table, two points below the top four, and some fans are starting to dream of a potential European charge.

Fofana problem

Chelsea will be favourites but their recent form has dropped and have not won in their past four games. On Tuesday night, the West London outfit fell to a 2-1 defeat by Atalanta in the Champions League. To compound Chelsea’s frustrations, Wesley Fofana was forced off early.

The centre-back had replaced Trevoh Chalobah - taken off to manage his minutes - at half-time. However, Fofana suffered a freak eye injury and had to be withdrawn for Tosin Adarabioyo. "He had a problem with his eye," Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca said. "He struggled to see a little bit but hopefully he can be available for Saturday. The change of Tosin was because we needed to change Wes.”

Chelsea injury news

If Fofana is absent then Chelsea could be missing a total of seven players. They will be without midfield maestro Moises Caicedo, who was sent off for serious foul play in a 1-1 draw against Arsenal last month. In addition, Romeo Lavia is also on the sidelines meaning Maresca is somewhat short in the engine room.

Liam Delap, who was a summer transfer target for Everton, has had a frustrating period since he moved to Stamford Bridge. The striker only recently recovered from a hamstring injury but now has a shoulder problem and is reportedly sidelined for four weeks.

Levi Colwill will not play this season after the defender ruptured his ACL during the summer, while Dario Essugo underwent thigh surgery in September and is still on the comeback trail. Mykhailo Mudryk is suspended from football after being charged by the FA with doping offences.

Chelsea talisman Cole Palmer did not play against Atalanta as his minutes are being managed following injury. Palmer is likely to be back in the squad to face Everton.
