Enzo Maresca has provided an update on Chelsea’s injury situation after their defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League.

Enzo Maresca has been discussing Chelsea’s injury situation after their Champions League defeat to Atalanta on Tuesday night. The Blues slipped out of the automatic progression spots and slipped into a playoff spot after giving up a one-goal lead, that was established by Joao Pedro, to lose in Bergamo.

Next up is a tricky-looking test against Everton, who are just one point behind Chelsea in the table, with former player Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall at the centre of the Toffees’ impressive season so far.

And ahead of those games, there are some fresh injury issues from the Atalanta clash, and Maresca has issued an update.

Wesley Fofana

Fofana had to go off in Bergamo, but Maresca believes that the defender will be in contention for a return on Saturday. “The change of Tosin was because we needed to change Wes, so that was forced on us for sure,” said the Italian.

“Wes has a problem in his eye. In this moment it is quite bad, he struggles to see a little bit. But hopefully he can be okay and available for Saturday.”

Trevoh Chalobah and Enzo Fernandez

Elsewhere, it looks like the scares involving Chalobah and Fernandez were not serious enough to warrant any concerns looking ahead to the weekend. “Both changes were because Trev and Enzo, they are both playing every minute in every game, so they both were not 100 per cent,” Maresca said.

“Also one of the reasons with Trev was that he had a yellow card and we wanted to avoid any problems with that, so those are the reasons why we changed them.”

Chalobah on the disappointing Atalanta defeat

Speaking after the game, Chalobah spoke about the disappointing defeat that leaves Chelsea battling for an automatic spot with two games remaining. “We have been in this situation before, every team has, so we need to focus on the next game, and it is another opportunity to get a result,” the defender told the club website.

“We’re obviously down and disappointed. It is three points lost. They didn’t really create us too many problems, and it is important when it is 1-0, in the first ten to 15 minutes of the second half to stay in the game and give yourself the best opportunity to win.

“They scored and it put us on the back foot, and in the second half we didn’t really get going and didn’t get control. It was tough out there. In the first half I thought we did well to have that control and it is always important when you come to any stadium with an intense crowd to quieten them and I thought we did that in the first half.”
