Jamie Carragher has apologised to Mohamed Salah after branding him a 'disgrace' for his recent sledgehammer against Arne Slot's regime.

The Liverpool legend insists he 'loves' Salah but reiterated that the 33-year-old needs to 'behave himself' away from the pitch.

Liverpool beat Inter Milan 1-0 in Italy thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai's late penalty and thereby secured their first Champions League away win without Salah since 2009.

The Egyptian, who may or may not feature against Brighton on Saturday before flying out to the Africa Cup of Nations, was left at home in a strong show of discipline from Slot.

Carragher was highly critical of Salah after his devastating comments but said on CBS Sports: 'Mo, I apologise I've upset you. I love you as the Liverpool player, but you just need to behave yourself off the pitch.'

Salah claimed he had no relationship with manager Slot and hinted that the Brighton game could be his last for the club after Liverpool's 3-3 draw at Leeds on Saturday.

Carragher was fuming that Salah had claimed Liverpool had 'thrown him under the bus'

The £400,000-per-week winger has not played just 45 minutes in Liverpool's last four games after a severe dip in form.

And Carragher blasted him on Monday night football in an eight-minute rant which some felt overstepped the mark - while others like the raw honesty.

'I thought it was a disgrace what he did after the game,' Carragher said.

'Some people have painted it as an emotional outburst, I do not think it was.

'I think whenever Mo Salah stops in a mixed zone, which he's done four times in eight years at Liverpool, it is choreographed by him and his agent to cause maximum damage and to strengthen his own position.

'He did that 12 months ago and I called him out on this show about it. He played on the heartstrings of the Liverpool supporters.

'Liverpool were top of the league and he'd scored the wining goal at Southampton. That was the time to come out and put pressure on the Liverpool ownership. For the rest of the season you have banners in the crowd saying 'Give Mo his dough'.

'He's chosen this weekend to do this now and he's waited for a bad result, they've conceded a last minute goal. The Liverpool supporters, the manager, the whole club feels like it is in the gutter at the moment, and he's chosen that time to go for the manager and maybe try and get him sacked.

Salah suggested he no longer had a relationship with Liverpool manager Arne Slot

The Liverpool star's comments came after he remained on the bench against Leeds on Saturday

'That's the way I felt about it.

'The line that stands out for me is 'thrown under the bus'. He's tried to throw the club under the bus twice in the last 12 months with the situations just mentioned.

'Going after the owners initially, and these are owners who have been paying him hundreds of thousands of pounds for six years, he's complained a year ago because they hadn't given him a new contract at the age of 32. The club are more than entitled to do that.

'With the manager right now, Salah should be doing as much as he can now to try and help the club get out of the worst run of results they've had since the 1950s, and he hasn't done that.'

Carragher drew the comparison between Salah and other global stars, including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe.

He admitted legendary players 'get a privilege', citing Salah being freed from defensive duties at Liverpool to allow him to maximise his attacking output.

Carragher, however, suggested that while the ego of the players could be beneficial in helping drive them on to achieve new landmarks and targets, it could prove detrimental to a team in this situation.

'He's a legendary figure and all those players get a privilege. Exactly the same one as Salah gets at Liverpool and that's he doesn't have to defend. he doesn't have to chase back,' Carragher said.

Carragher suggested Salah's comments may have been timed with the intention to get Slot sacked as Liverpool boss

The Sky Sports pundit hailed Salah's achievements at Liverpool, but suggested while his ego can be a strength that drives success, it can become a problem in this type of scenario

'That's what he has at Liverpool but when we are talking about throwing people under the bus, he's thrown the Liverpool right back under the bus for eight years. Imagine playing behind him for eight years.

'But we accept it because we are a superstar and he's scored 250 goals, and he's given me as a Liverpool supporter some of the greatest nights of my life watching him and what he's done.

'You also think of the ego of these types of players like Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe and Salah. I think they have a feeling that the success of a football club is down to them. I have no problem with that because I think that is what drives them on to score more goals, get more success and it benefits Liverpool.

'It then becomes a problem when you are in a situation like this, and when Salah is talking about how many goals he's scored and what he's done last season, he's always talking about himself.'

Carragher then pointed to Salah's struggles at Chelsea, before returning to the Premier League, and failure to win the African Cup of Nations with Egypt to highlight that even star players need help from their team-mates to achieve.

'I want to remind Mo Salah and his agent, before he joined Liverpool he was known as the guy who failed at Chelsea. That's a fact.

'Egypt are the most successful nation at AFCON. Salah has never won the AFCON. That is not me trying to put Salah down as a player, I've have just said he's one of the best players in the world in the last eight years. there are very few better.

'But what it tells Salah and his agent is it is not about an individual. You weren't a big star before you came to Liverpool, you haven't really won anything with Egypt, and all that tells you is, no matter how good a player you are, you need help from your team-mates, your manager and the fans.

'It is really important that he remembers that and when he is talking about that in the mixed zone after the game, all it is about is me, me, me.'

Among the explosive statements Salah made after being left on the bench for Liverpool's 3-3 draw against Leeds, was his claim that Carragher was 'going to criticise me again'.

Carragher had previously called upon Salah to front up to fans over the reigning champions recent poor run of form, after Curtis Jones had addressed the media following their 4-1 loss to PSV last month.

The pundit responded directly to Salah's comment, stating: 'Have I ever criticised Salah on the pitch? I've never criticised him for not working back, when he's gone games without a goal and I've never criticised him when he should have passed to someone.

'That's because he's an absolute legend of the Liverpool and what you get from him, you have to put up with certain bits. I think some of the criticism of Salah this season has been excessive.

'But I will go after Salah when he tries to throw my club under the bus off the pitch and when he's just thinking about himself.'

Salah was back at the AXA Training Centre base on Sunday and Monday to take part in sessions but Liverpool have made the decision to not take him to Italy.

It is understood club figures, including head coach Slot, think a short period out of the squad is in the best interests of the player and club.

Carragher had last month called on Salah to address Liverpool fans amid their poor run of form

This is not disciplinary action but merely a squad selection decision taken after Salah voiced concern over his future at Liverpool.

The 33-year-old signed a two-year mega-money deal, which runs until summer 2027, earlier this season. Clubs in Saudi Arabia, the United States and now Europe are on red alert over his future.

Salah voiced his dissatisfaction after again being left on the bench, meaning he has played just 45 minutes in their last three fixtures against West Ham, Sunderland, and Daniel Farke's side.

It is not the first time the Egyptian has made incendiary remarks but his claim that he has no relationship with Slot was alarming.

'I could not believe I was sitting on the bench for 90 minutes,' he said. 'That's the third time. It's the first time in my career I think.

'(I am) very disappointed, I have done so much for this club over the years, especially last season. It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. That's how I feel.

'Someone wants me to get all the blame. The club promised me a lot in summer. Now I'm on bench so I can say they haven't kept those promises.

'I used to have a good relationship (with manager Slot). Now we don't have any relationship and I don't know why.

'It seems like someone does not want me in the club.

'I called my mum and dad and told them to come to the Brighton game. It doesn't matter if I play or not. I'm going to enjoy it. I'm just going to be at Anfield and say goodbye to the fans before the African Cup of Nations, because I don't know what is going to happen when I am there.

'It's not acceptable to me to be fair. If I was somewhere else, every club would protect its players. Now, it's "Throw Mo under the bus because he is a problem in a team". I don't think I am a problem.

'I am not fighting for my position every day because I have earned it. I am not bigger than the club. I am not bigger than anything. But I have earned it.'

Salah refused to answer a question about interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia.
