David Ornstein shares the message now coming out of Liverpool about Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah is due to leave Liverpool in less than a week for the AFCON, following a bombshell interview casting his future into doubt.

Salah’s actions after Leeds United were interesting and could have potentially caused a rift between the Liverpool owners, fans and manager.

However, that did not take place, with FSG supporting Arne Slot during a difficult run and key figures like Jamie Carragher criticising the winger’s actions.

Thierry Henry has been similarly negative about Salah and how he’s acted in the last few days, but all is not lost when it comes to his future at the club.

Liverpool stance on Mohamed Salah leaving in January

Speaking on the Back Pages podcast, which was released on December 10, David Ornstein shared that the message coming out of Liverpool regarding Salah is that they want him to stay.

He said: “Well, Liverpool were at pains to point out that this wasn’t a disciplinary decision. It was taken by the club for sort of common sense in the best interests of all parties. And when you look at how tonight has panned out, it probably was for the best.

“But I think we need to remember Mo Salah is one of the greatest players in the world and certainly has been in recent years, right up until last season when he led Liverpool to the title with a standout performance throughout the campaign. And he’s been setting records and setting the Premier League alight for so long. So there needs to be respect kept on his name.

“And we shouldn’t be writing him off just because Liverpool have won tonight and they’re in a tough moment. And his controversial comments that put uncertainty over his future. And it is him that has done that.

“Because Liverpool committed to him with a new two-year contract. The sort of message coming from Anfield is that they want him to stay. That’s always been their intention.”

The staggering sum Liverpool would save on wages if Mohamed Salah leaves. How would you reinvest it?💰

“As well as Salah’s wages, which reportedly are around £400,000 per week, you’re also looking at a saving in National Insurance contributions. That’s not a trivial sum. National Insurance is set at 15 per cent as of April 2025, so if £400,000 is Salah’s basic weekly wage, Liverpool are also paying another £60,000 on top of that.

“Over the course of 18 months, that’s another £4.7m. The numbers aren’t an exact science, because some of Salah’s wages will be paid as image rights, which are taxed recently.”

When will Mohamed Salah return to Liverpool?

Salah could play against Brighton this weekend, though that may depend on what happens behind the scenes in the coming days.

He then leaves for the AFCON earlier next week, with Egypt’s group-stage campaign getting underway on December 22.

At the very least, Salah will miss the rest of Liverpool’s fixtures in 2025 as his country’s final group stage match doesn’t take place until the 29th.

In the worst-case scenario, the winger will be away from Anfield until after 18 January, when the AFCON final is set to take place.
