Everton have held many a famous night at Goodison Park in their illustrious 147-year history as a club, seeing many teams come and fail on Merseyside.
But for legendary football commentator Martin Tyler, there is one moment that sticks out for him, having witnessed the occasion with his own eyes.
Although Goodison Park is now no longer Everton’s first-team home, despite still being used by the women’s side, fans will look back with fond memories at their former home and the glorious days that used to take place there in both the First Division and the Premier League.
And, for Tyler, it was the win over Bayern Munich 40 years ago that he believes has still left Goodison Park shaking to this day despite the move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton’s win over Bayern Munich remains Martin Tyler’s favourite Goodison Park moment
Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Overlap, Premier League stalwart and boyhood Toffee, Jamie Carragher, spoke to Martin Tyler about a memory that he had as a child when the Toffees beat Bayern Munich 3-1 in the European Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final second-leg.
The Scouse native said: “In some ways, commentators are part of your life, aren’t they? When you’re a kid growing up, you always get the voice, don’t you.
“You [Tyler] were that for me. The reason I say that was the 1985 European Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final, the biggest game in Everton’s history.
“I’m an Everton fan and you were the commentator on that game. That takes me back to being seven years of age, but you’re still going now.”

And Tyler agreed that it was one of Everton’s best-ever performances – stating that Goodison ‘used to shake’.
He said: “Our mutual friend Andy Grat absolutely whacked Bayern Munich, didn’t he? They physically went, and they were out for the second half.
“That was when Goodison used to shake, and it probably was still shaking up until the end of last season – and may even shake now with women’s football being played there.
“It was a very special night.”
The veteran commentator is not wrong – the win over the Bundesliga giants is still fondly remembered to this day by Evertonians of the 80s, which was the club’s last golden era.
Everton’s win over Bayern was arguably Goodison Park’s finest hour
Everton have had some incredibly memorable nights under the lights at the Grand Old Lady.
Some have more so been through relief – the final day win over Bournemouth in 2023, the draw with Coventry City in the last game of the 1997-98 campaign and an incredible 3-2 win over Wimbledon in 1994 all kept the Toffees in the Premier League at the final hour.
But there have been more causes for celebration. A famous 1-0 victory over Manchester United in 2005 saw Everton edge closer to Champions League qualification to spark wild scenes, and of course, the final Goodison game last season against Southampton was a real party atmosphere.
Which do you prefer, the Hill Dickinson Stadium or Goodison Park?

But the win over Bayern Munich is probably Goodison Park’s best ever moment. Beating the German champions 3-1 on home turf after an impressive 0-0 draw away from home saw them enter the final against Austrian outfit Rapid Vienna.
And another 3-1 win in Rotterdam meant Everton were crowned champions of the Cup Winners’ Cup – where they could have achieved an incredible treble had they not lost the FA Cup final to Manchester United just three days later.
