Underrated Chelsea star wins Premier League award after brilliant November

Chelsea’s December couldn’t be going much worse, but last month, the Blues were on fire in the Premier League.

Of the four league outings in November, Chelsea won three and held Arsenal to a hard-earned draw at Stamford Bridge.

Reece James was named Chelsea’s Player of the Month for his imperious displays.

But it’s a teammate of his who has gotten the recognition from Premier League fans, and he deserves every bit of praise that’s thrown his way.

Robert Sanchez named PFA Premier League Fans’ Player of the Month

Robert Sanchez has quickly become Chelsea’s most underrated player this season.

The Spaniard was a brick wall for the Blues in November, keeping three clean sheets and conceding just once against the league leaders. Maresca said Arsenal was one of Sanchez’s best performances.

It’s a far cry from the error waiting to happen that was Sanchez in 2024/25.

The improvements in his game have been clear to see. Sanchez has become elite at dealing with crosses — a real concern before — and is far less of a risk on the ball now, too.

Add to that the amount of change going on in front of him, and his solidity at the base of the side looks even more impressive.

His form has been rewarded with Premier League fans voting him the best performer in the league this past month.

Sanchez’s Chelsea future still unclear

Despite how well Chelsea’s keeper has played this season, it hasn’t put a stop to the narrative that a new number one is needed if the Blues are to contend for a title.

Ian Wright said Chelsea need new centre-backs and a keeper if they are to really push the likes of Arsenal and Man City.

But what more can he do to stake his claim? Sanchez is one of the best in the league in his position, going off this campaign anyway.

Mike Penders is tipped to break into Chelsea’s first team when he arrives from Strasbourg next season, but there’s no guarantee he hits the ground running.

When you get a reputation in football, it’s extremely hard to shake. It feels like no matter how Sanchez performs, he will always be viewed as a risk.

That being said, this latest award does suggest the narrative around him is changing.
