The Reavey family enjoyed a weekend to remember at Everton after being nominated for a well-deserved Christmas treat by family and friends. Dad Adam, mum Victoria and their two children, 12-year-old Milly and Charlie, eight, recently suffered the upheaval of a house fire that gutted their Northamptonshire home, forced them into temporary accommodation for the foreseeable future and robbed them of all their treasured possessions.

That included all of the family’s Everton memorabilia, including priceless mementoes of the last Premier League game to be played at Goodison Park and even some from the 1966 World Cup game played at the iconic stadium.

However, Everton stepped in to help the firth-generation of Blues fans, following an appeal from a family member, who answered the club's call for worthy fan nominations for a Christmas surprise by writing: “There are more important things in life than stuff, but they will not be back in their home for 12 months and the Toffees are such a huge part of our lives, so an extra special present to keep up spirits would be so appreciated.”

On Friday, the Reavey family were invited to the Finch Farm training ground, where they were invited to tell their story and were stunned to be welcomed by Iliman Ndiaye, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Charlie’s favourite player, Jordan Pickford.

In conjunction with the club's official retail partner, Fanatics, the first-team trio presented the family with gifts to replace Charlie’s lost bedroom items, including Everton curtains, a duvet, blanket, teddies and wall dressings. There was even a special dog bowl and toy for the family ‘hero’, Tilly, who initially alerted the family to the fire so they could escape unharmed.

The players also presented the family with signed shirts, gloves and boots – and rounded off their day with a special club invitation to enjoy a VIP experience at Hill Dickinson Stadium for the following day’s Premier League game against Nottingham Forest.

That included premium dining in The Arch restaurant along with a voucher donated by Fanatics to spend in the Everton Store, followed by a visit to the inner sanctum of the boardroom, where former Everton players Peter Reid and Gary Lineker met the family to present them with a special box filled with memorabilia from the final game at Goodison, to replace those lost in the fire.

Dad Adam said: “We can't believe this. You couldn't put a price on what we've had this weekend and it’s been absolutely amazing.

“From the minute we got here, everyone has been so welcoming and you don't realise until something happens how good people can be.

“The lengths people have gone to, just to make sure we're okay and make this all happen. Every part of it's been absolutely amazing, more than you could ever think.”

Recalling the fire that turned their lives upside down in September, Adam added: “It's probably the hardest time that I've been through in my life.

“There's nothing left of anything, really. Even if it was there, it is so badly smoke-damaged you can't use it, so we pretty much lost everything.

“At first the kids were really strong. But then it's the little things that they don't realise they've lost and all stuff they've collected that you can't get back.

“Just from an Everton point of view, we've lost some special things. All of my shirts I've kept from when I was down at Charlie's age to the last game of the season, along with the programmes and the scarves. Charlie kept a programme from every game he'd been to, so they've gone. All the teddies he's collected and Milly's shirts right from when she was newborn, all the way up, were in her wardrobe, so they're all gone.

“So, it's just like starting with nothing again, but we are really lucky for how people have really helped us out and we’re trying to stay positive and just thinking we are still lucky.

“It could be so much worse. We're all alive. That's the main thing and this has just been a weekend off without actually thinking about the house. Just being us and just having fun.

“Not having to take phone calls or emails or text messaging or chasing things up. Just switching off from it all for a weekend – and it's been amazing!”
