Mohamed Salah has faced an eventful few days after sharing his thoughts about being left out of the Liverpool team. The 33-year-old did not start for the fourth consecutive game as the Reds recorded a win over Inter Milan on Tuesday, having been omitted from the squad following his controversial comments about the club.

The Liverpool great said he feels he's been “thrown under the bus” after being an unused substitute during the team’s 3-3 draw at Leeds United. Salah spoke about the state of his relationship - or lack thereof - with manager Arne Slot and hinted at uncertainty over his future at Anfield ahead of representing Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations later this month.

“I called my mum and dad and told them to come to the Brighton game [on Saturday],” he said. "It doesn't matter if I play or not. I'm going to enjoy it. I am just going to be at Anfield and say goodbye to the fans before the African Cup of Nations, because I don’t know what is going to happen when I am there.”

Salah signed a new two-year deal with the Reds in April, but his post-match interview has led to questions over whether the iconic forward could leave the club, just months after scoring 29 goals to help Liverpool win the Premier League. The Egypt international has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in the January transfer window.

Having posted a picture of himself training alone while the Liverpool squad were in Milan, Salah will be relying on the support of his family and others close to him during this challenging period. The 33-year-old has previously spoken about his family’s affection for the club.

Wife and kids

Salah met his wife Magi while growing up in Egypt. The childhood sweethearts married in 2013 before welcoming their first daughter Makka in 2014, followed by Kayan in 2020.

Earlier this year, after signing his new contract, Salah shared his family’s reaction to the news. “They feel at home. They were very happy, Magi and the kids, they were very happy that we’re staying another two years,” he told Liverpool’s club website. “It feels like home so everyone was happy.

“I think Makka was the happiest one in the family, she wanted us to stay. Of course we all wanted to stay but Makka because her friends are here and the school. It was a very good vibe after the moment that I signed.”

In 2024, Salah admitted: “My kids are Scousers now! Their language is like the accent as well. So, it’s a big change.”

Parents and sister

The Liverpool star has already stated that he plans for his parents to attend the upcoming Brighton game. Salah has previously shared pictures of his mother and father on social media and spoken about the role they played in helping his career.

Meanwhile, his sister Rabab Salah has shown support for her sibling following his comments about the club. Posting a picture with her brother, she wrote: “The one and only. Legend,” along with an Egyptian flag, crown and heart emojis.

Agent

Salah’s agent Ramy Abbas Issa is yet to publicly respond to his client’s comments. However, he has previously provided insight during other important periods of Salah’s career.

In 2022, after Salah had signed a new contract, Issa told Al Arabiya Sport: “It’s good to know where he’s going to be for the next two-and-a-half years, but when someone has been playing football for so many years at the highest level - I don’t think you need much motivation.

“Even when he’s stepped on the pitch he doesn't think about contracts or these things, he just lives the moment and tries to do his best for whichever team, regardless of where he is playing."

The following year, when Salah was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, he wrote on social media: "If we considered leaving LFC this year, we wouldn’t have renewed the contract last summer. Mohamed remains committed to LFC."

In February, responding to a post about Arne Slot’s work at Liverpool, Issa wrote: “Excellent at his job.”
