An Everton target may be set to move elsewhere in the January transfer window

Things are looking up at the Hill Dickinson Stadium at present – to say the least – as Everton continue a top run of form to find themselves in the top seven after 15 Premier League fixtures of 2025/26.

Their first campaign at the new ground was always going to be one of transition but also of celebration, and results on the pitch have only reinforced that further. A solid start to the season gave way to an inconsistent autumn, but four victories in their last five have seen the Toffees shoot up the table and leapfrog arch-rivals Liverpool. The festive period is now looking all the more exciting for the Toffees.

Manager David Moyes had this to say after their most recent victory over Nottingham Forest: "I'm too old now to say we just want to avoid relegation, but I'm not daft enough to say Europe is possible. I don't think we are quite ready, but we will keep knocking at the door."

Moyes’ words represent a reality where it is difficult to pinpoint where Everton’s targets should lie at present. The January transfer window could, therefore, offer them the opportunity to make another statement.

Roma talks underway with Everton target Joshua Zirkzee

The Dutchman is said to be Roma’s ‘number one target’ as the club aim to bring in a new attacking option for Gian Piero Gasperini to strengthen their push for the top four in Serie A.

The Italian club are reportedly seeking a loan with an option to buy based on ‘certain objectives’, while the Red Devils are thought to be ready to sanction a permanent deal for the forward, who has featured just eight times in the Premier League this season but scored a well-taken goal in the recent victory at Crystal Palace.

Negotiations between the two clubs are set to continue, with Roma hoping to have a deal secured by the first days of the transfer window when it opens on January 1.

Forward option could be on Everton January wish list

Everton saw links to Zirkzee emerge last month, as the Toffees’ need for further forward options deepened amidst the lack of a regular goalscorer. Summer signing Thierno Barry has since scored his first goal for the club last weekend, finally breaking his Everton duck in a momentous moment for the young striker. Whether or not he will now take that confidence and elevate his game to new levels will be seen over the festive period.

Should Barry still need more time to adapt – which is understandable for a 23-year-old, new to the division with less than three seasons of top-flight football under his belt – Moyes could still look at bringing in another striker in January to take the pressure off Barry and Beto.

Zirkzee has rarely been prolific in his career thus far but certainly offers a creative option up front, linking up well with the players around him and popping up with important goals. It appears likely that the 24-year-old will be on the move in search of earning a World Cup place with the Netherlands, with Roma appearing to be front-runners but a Premier League move not out of the question.
