“Why are they angry?”–Liverpool star responds to fan annoyance

Dominik Szoboszlai was on the scoresheet for Liverpool against Inter Milan on Tuesday.

The goal came controversially, as the Reds earned a late penalty after Alessandro Bastoni pulled Florian Wirtz’s shirt. The German international took a tumble in an exaggerated way and he’s not exactly the most popular person in Italy right now.

Szoboszlai spoke to Tuttomercatoweb in the mixed zone after Liverpool’s win. Stranegly, he was told that Inter Milan fans are angry and then asked about.

The Hungarian made it clear that the referee should be blamed and not him.

“Why are they angry [Inter fans]? The referee made the decision. They should blame him, not me.”

The midfielder was also asked whether Ibrahima Konate’s goal earlier in the game should’ve been disallowed.

“I think it was the right decision. It was a handball and a free kick for Inter, but they gave it back to us in the final minutes.”

Speaking about the game in general, the 25-year-old seemed confident about a top eight finish.

“It was a great victory, a tough victory because it’s never easy to play at San Siro, but in the Champions League in general. A clean victory, and I think we can finish in the top eight.”

Szoboszlai has perhaps been Liverpool’s best player so far this season, taking on responsibility whilst others have faltered. The Hungary international is close to Mohamed Salah and will be feeling the impact of the ongoing drama, something the Reds need to sort out as quickly as possible.
