Report: Favouritism of Liverpool teammate is real reason for Mo Salah's explosive outburst

The biggest story in football right now is all about Mohamed Salah and his future at Liverpool after his recent explosive outburst. The Egyptian took aim at his critics and questioned Arne Slot, sparking a huge response from teammates, pundits, and fans alike.

Following a 3-3 draw with Leeds United, in which he didn't play, Salah said that he had "no relationship" with Arne Slot and claimed that he has been "thrown under the bus" by the club. Among the various names to respond to the interview, Jamie Carragher called the winger's actions "a disgrace."

Anfield icon Steven Gerrard has earned praise for his more measured response, but whichever side you are on, it's impossible to deny the drama that has followed Liverpool ever since Salah's interview. In a shock report, however, one publication has claimed a teammate is actually to blame for the Egyptian's anger.

Report: Florian Wirtz To Blame For Salah's Anger

FLORIAN WIRTZ

According to German outlet Sport Bild, Salah has been sent 'into a rage' over the favouritism shown to teammate Florian Wirtz. The club spent a Premier League record £116m on the midfielder (since overtaken by the £125m spent on Alexander Isak).

Bild journalist Axel Hesse claims that this transfer has meant that Slot now sees Wirtz as the man to lead his attack, leaving Salah feeling sidelined. The reporter explained: "Internally, they've known for years that Mo Salah has the biggest ego at the club. This was accepted as long as the striker delivered with goals. Like last season, when he fired Liverpool to the championship with 29 goals. But it was also clear: if he stopped scoring, he would lose the support of the club.

"Only Salah seems not to have grasped this. Therefore, he launched a scathing attack after being benched three times in a row. He didn't care about his teammates. Publicly, he remained silent when new signing Florian Wirtz and coach Arne Slot came under fire.

"The fact that Wirtz is now leading the attack, ushering in a future in which Salah plays no part, sent the Egyptian into a rage. He's the enemy of his own dressing room. But not for much longer. Liverpool must sell Salah immediately so that the "You'll Never Walk Alone" feeling returns to the team."

Both Wirtz and Salah Have Struggled in 2025/26

Wirtz certainly hasn't made the best start to life in England, as he's still yet to score a single goal in any of his first 20 appearances for the Reds across all competitions. He has just one assist in 14 Premier League outings, too.

By contrast, Salah has five goals and three assists in 19 appearances in total this term, with four goals and two assists coming in his 13 league matches. Perhaps this is why the winger is said to be frustrated with the German, but it's not as if Wirtz has avoided scrutiny for his poor performances.

What's more, the £166m man hasn't been a guaranteed starter under Slot either, with five of his outings coming as a substitute this term. That said, he has at least featured in every league and Champions League game he's been fit for – and has started the last four games, when Salah has been left out. The Egyptian didn't make the team which beat Inter Milan in the week, a direct consequence of his outburst, and was an unused sub against West Ham and Leeds, while only playing one half off the bench against Sunderland.

If Salah does have any frustrations, it seems somewhat unfair to lay them at the feet of Wirtz. But it may also be true that the German's arrival always seemed likely to usher in a new era at Anfield, one which was not so reliant on the 33-year-old.
