Unai Emery offers fresh update on Harvey Elliott’s future at Aston Villa

Harvey Elliott has struggled for playing time at Aston Villa, making only five appearances this season. However, he would make his move permanent for £35million if he reaches 10 appearances. The England U21 international has not been named in any of Villa’s last seven Premier League matchday squads, although he had been included in the team for their previous five European fixtures this campaign.

Aston Villa saw off competition from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig for Elliott’s services, while the midfielder turned down interest from both West Ham and Fulham earlier in the summer. Elliott made just one appearance for Liverpool in the opening three games of the Premier League season, a brief one-minute cameo off the bench against Newcastle.

Elliott moved to Anfield from Fulham in the summer of 2019. He has since racked up 149 appearances and scored 17 goals. During his time at the club, he has lifted the Premier League twice, the Carabao Cup twice, the Emirates FA Cup, and the FA Community Shield.

Unai Emery has confirmed that Elliott did not travel with the Aston Villa squad for their Europa League clash against FC Basel. The Villa boss also revealed that he has spoken with the Liverpool loanee on several occasions about his limited playing time as he assesses the midfielder’s future at the club.

“We are speaking with him and about his situation. He is not here with us,” Emery said in his pre-match press conference. “Hopefully, we can get the best for him and the best for us. I respect him as a player and as a person. “He is training well, but we have one circumstance with him.

“Hopefully, we can get a solution for him to try to play consistently and try to continue in his career with us or not. I have spoken with him two or three times about the situation we have with him,” Emery added. “Firstly, my decision and also the situation. He is on loan playing with us, but he is not definitely adding to us with a permanent contract.”
