Liverpool hope to return to winning ways in the Premier League when Brighton & Hove Albion visit Anfield on Saturday afternoon. The Reds enjoyed a positive midweek following a difficult period, defeating Inter Milan in Italy despite leaving Mohamed Salah out of the squad. Salah’s explosive comments had left manager Arne Slot expressing concern over the Egyptian’s future at the club.
Liverpool began the season strongly with five consecutive Premier League wins but have since struggled, recording just two victories, two draws, and six defeats since September 27. In their last five league games, they have only one win, a 2-0 triumph over West Ham, which was followed by draws against newly promoted Sunderland and Leeds United.
Brighton, meanwhile, will be eager to avoid another slip-up. The Seagulls have repeatedly climbed close to the top four this season, only to fall short. Fabian Hurzeler’s side sit three points off the top four after 15 matches, though they could have been higher had they not squandered a two-goal lead against Aston Villa and drawn 1-1 with West Ham on Sunday, also at home.
Liverpool have lost just one of their eight Premier League home games against Brighton (W5 D2), although that defeat came the last time they faced the Seagulls as reigning champions, a 0-1 loss in February 2021. Brighton won their last meeting with Liverpool 3-2 in May, but they have never beaten the Reds in back-to-back league matches.
One player who needs to tread cautiously is Dominik Szoboszlai. The Hungarian international is one caution away from a one-match suspension in the Premier League. Szoboszlai scored the decisive goal as Liverpool secured a 1-0 win at Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday. The 25-year-old has five goals and five assists in 22 appearances across all competitions this season.
