Real Madrid 1-2 Man City Stats: Another Defeat Nudges Xabi Alonso a Step Closer to the Abyss

Manchester City came from a goal down to earn a 2-1 Champions League win over Real Madrid at the Bernabéu on Wednesday, leaving Los Blancos coach Xabi Alonso on the brink.

Madrid went into the game having won just two of their past seven matches in all competitions, form that’s contributed to Alonso coming under intense pressure, and City inflicted a defeat that could ultimately spell doom for the former Spain international.

It was going well enough for Alonso and Madrid initially, with Rodrygo putting them in front with a well-taken goal to end the Brazil forward’s long goal drought.

But Nico O’Reilly’s first Champions League goal restored parity before an Erling Haaland spot-kick turned the scoreline on its head.

There was then little reaction from the hosts in the second half bar a couple of late half chances, as City quite comfortably held on to just their second ever away win over Real Madrid.

A bright start by the home team gave every indication City were in for a long night, though the visitors were handed a reprieve when a second-minute penalty decision was overturned due to Vinícius Júnior being fouled outside the box rather than in it.

Madrid were good value for the lead when it arrived in the 28th minute, as Rodrygo – starting in place of the injured Kylian Mbappé – strode into the right side of the box and fired home.

In doing so, Rodrygo ended a 32-game goalless run across all competitions, with that his first Real Madrid goal since early March.

It didn’t last long, however.

Thibaut Courtois parried a shot right to the feet of O’Reilly in the 35th minute, allowing the youngster an easy finish – it also made him the second-youngest player (20 yeards, 264 days) to score for an English club against Real Madrid in the Champions League after Alan Smith (20y, 129d) for Leeds.

City then got their noses in front just before half-time, Haaland coolly converting a penalty after being wrestled to the ground by Antonio Rüdiger.

Taking the lead before finding themselves behind at half-time of a European Cup/Champions League game – this had only happened once before for Madrid.

The deficit should’ve been wiped out early in the second half when Jude Bellingham chipped over from close range at the end of a brilliant flowing move.

But that was hardly the start of an onslaught. Madrid struggled to penetrate their visitors when not breaking at speed, while at the other end Courtois was called into action on several occasions.

Madrid offered up some late pressure, with Vinícius acrobatically firing over and substitute Endrick seeing a header strike the crossbar.

But it wasn’t enough to spare themselves as Pep Guardiola claimed his seventh away win over Real Madrid, a tally he’s only bettered against Everton (9), Arsenal (8) and West Ham (8).
