Opinion: Everton loanee looks to return to Finch Farm in January due to injury

Everton have a number of exciting talents spending the season out on loan in the lower leagues of English football this season.

Isaac Heath is currently smashing it at Accrington Stanley, having registered nine goal involvements for the League Two outfit.

Accrington’s manager has been stunned by Heath’s quality, and it’s become pretty evident that he’s probably a bit too good for that level.

Harrison Armstrong is also enjoying a successful loan at Preston, with many of their supporters tipping him to go right to the very top.

Everton have another talented teenager out on loan, but his spell away from Finch Farm hasn’t been particularly productive due to injury.

He could return to Merseyside in January.

Everton look set to recall Martin Sherif from loan at Rotherham United

Everton have really high hopes for Martin Sherif and there was widespread interest in the EFL for his signature in the summer.

Rotherham United won the race to sign Sherif, and his career at the League One outfit got off to a great start.

The 19-year-old striker scored on his debut against Wigan Athletic but since then has been plagued by three different hamstring injuries.

Sherif has only been able to start four league games all season, and hasn’t been in the squad for the last few weeks.

His manager Matt Hamshaw recently said: “I’ve said it’s been tough for Martin and it’s also been tough for me, because I want him to stay fit. I want him to be ripe and ready.

“He’s a big, strapping, lad so he’s going to carry a risk of injury because his bones probably haven’t developed as of yet into the body that he’s got, if that makes sense.

“He’s got huge promise. When he first came in, we saw that, and then, obviously, his injuries have hit him.”

The Rotherham Advertiser expect Sherif to return to Everton in January, so that Hamshaw can sign a new striker on loan.

Rotherham have a clause in Martin Sherif’s loan

It’s understood that Rotherham do have a clause in their contract with Sherif to send him back to Everton as soon as the January transfer window opens.

The Millers are currently languishing in mid-table in League One, but they aren’t too far adrift of the play-offs, so they’ll be keen to ensure they have a fit and available striker for the second half of the season.

That makes it more than likely that Sherif’s loan will be cut short, as he’s expected to remain sidelined until after Christmas.

Perhaps Everton could get him out on another loan elsewhere, although he will need time to get back up to match fitness again when he does return around the start of 2026.
