The Mohamed Salah saga at Liverpool continues to dominate headlines as Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Brighton looms large at Anfield. What was supposed to be a routine final appearance before the Africa Cup of Nations has transformed into yet another chapter in the ongoing breakdown between the Egyptian superstar and manager Arne Slot, with mounting evidence suggesting Salah will not feature against the Seagulls this weekend. The fallout from Salah’s explosive interview following last weekend’s 3-3 draw at Leeds United has proven more severe than many anticipated. After publicly claiming he felt “thrown under the bus” by Liverpool and revealing his relationship with Slot had deteriorated beyond repair, the 33-year-old was excluded from the traveling squad for Tuesday’s crucial Champions League clash against Inter Milan in Italy.

Liverpool secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory at the San Siro without their talismanic forward, raising serious questions about whether Salah has already played his final match for the club. Now Steven Gerrard has spoken further on the situation after already speaking about it earlier in the week. As part of his pundit duties on TNT Sports’ coverage of Man City’s 2-1 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night, Gerrard has claimed that Salah “needs” to apologise for some of the things he said in his interview at Elland Road:

“As someone who is connected to the club, got a lot of respect for the players, the club, and the hierarchy there,” Gerrard began. “What I tried to do on the show is to try and get a bit of common-sense [out], pour a bit of cold water on the situation. We all know that he’s done this explosive interview, he said a couple lines within the interview that are wrong… and I think he needs to apologise for that. I hope that Virgil van Dijk, as his captain and leader, will help put that together. The reality is, as a Liverpool fan, Mohamed Salah is a world-class footballer and he’s Liverpool’s best goalscorer. He helped win a league last year. We can’t all have short memories – he’s really important for the football club. Unless this situation is a lot worse than what we’re seeing. But from a fan and ex-player point of view, I wanted to put some common sense into it – he’s a world-class footballer and we need him. Hopefully the situation can be sorted out in the coming hours and days.”
