Martinelli breaks Champions League goals record

Gabriel Martinelli’s excellent goalscoring form in this season’s Champions League has seen him achieve something no Gunner has ever done before.

The Brazilian has been lethal in Europe this campaign, regularly finding the net to propel us to the top of the league phase table, and boast the only remaining 100% record after six matches.

And having scored in all five of his appearances in this season’s competition so far, Gabi has become the first player in our history to net in five straight matches in the Champions League.

Gabi’s great run began on matchday one when he came off the bench to devastating effect in Bilbao against Athletic Club, sprinting half the length of the field to score the opening goal of our 2-0 success, while he found the net again in another 2-0 win against Olympiacos.

He was also on target during our 4-0 demolition of Atletico Madrid, before sitting out the win at Sparta Prague. However he again made an impact as a substitute against Bayern Munich as he rounded off our 3-1 last month, before an outrageous strike finished off our win over Club Brugge.

Now he has surpassed the feats of four other Gunners who had netted in four matches in a row in the European Cup or Champions League. Ray Kennedy was the first to achieve it in the 1971/92 campaign, before Thierry Henry did the same during the 2004/05 group stages.

Emmanuel Adebayor also enjoyed a good goalscoring spell in the competition en route to the 2008/09 semi-finals, while the last player to reach four in a row was Martinelli’s compatriot Gabriel Jesus, who scored against PSV Eindhoven, Lens and Sevilla twice two seasons ago.

Gabi will look to extend his record when the competition resumes in the new year with a trip to Inter Milan and a home game against Kairat Almaty, although he has a lot of work to do to break the current Champions League record, held by Cristiano Ronaldo who netted in a staggering 11 games in a row between 2017 and 2018.

What is more achievable is hunting down our all-time European record for successive games scored in. Only two players now stand above Gabi - and it’s unsurprising which two are on top of the pile:

Our two all-time leading scorers once again lead the way, with Ian Wright holding the honour by getting his name on the scoresheet in eight successive matches during our 1994/95 Cup Winners’ Cup campaign. Wrighty scored in all our matches up to the final, as we advanced past Omonia, Brondby, Auxerre and Sampdoria before being defeated by Real Zaragoza.

Henry managed a streak of six as we again reached a European final, this time in the 1999/00 UEFA Cup. The Frenchman registered against Nantes before scoring in both legs against Deportivo La Coruna and Werder Bremen, and then netted a crucial goal in the semi-final against Lens.

Martinelli meanwhile continues to be our lucky omen. The goal against Club Brugge means he has now scored in 51 different matches for us, and has not lost any of them - another club record he holds.
