Arne slot: Red’s manager plans on signing a long-term deal with the young center back Jeremy Jacquet
Liverpool is trying for a contract extension with Konate. Things are not progressing well, and his contract ends in 2026. The manager started looking for some talented defensive options like Jeremy Jacquet.
Liverpool are scouting the French center-back Jeremy Jacquet and plan on signing him as Konate’s replacement. With this uncertainty in the defense signing Jacquet is a good strategic move for the club.
The young 20-year-old center back currently plays for the French club Stade Rennais F.C. And he has recently extended his contract with the club; that is till 2029.
The young defender turned down the Gunners when they reached out for him in the transfer window. Still, the club continues to monitor his progress and plans on taking on Liverpool and Manchester United in the signing battle.
What makes the French center-back Jeremy Jacquet an attractive option for the Reds?
The technical skills and the aerial threat that the Frenchman possesses make him an attractive option for the club. He is a 6 ft 2 in tall center back with very good athleticism and a strong defensive game. Moreover, his dribbling skills help him stand out as a defender; he also possesses a constant threat in the aerial position too. The defender is young, fast, and adapts well to the playstyle of the club.
The player is precise with his tackles and drops perfect long balls for the strikers. These attributes make him a smart and talented defender, which can be the perfect replacement for Konate.

Background/Context: Contract issues with Konate that may lead to signing of Jacquet
As of now, Konaté’s contract will be expiring in 2026, and the club is not progressing well with the extension deal of the same.
The club’s contract offer seems to be disappointing the player, as he demands a higher guaranteed base wage. The club, though, seems to be following their ideology of performance-based bonuses instead of high base salaries for players. He believes the current contract no longer reflects the value he brings to the team. Therefore, he demands a higher price.
He believes that the current contract no longer matches the value he is adding in the game and demands a higher price
This can make Three potential future scenario of Konate with the club:
Stay at Liverpool (coming to conclusion after negotiations with the club)
Go as a free transfer to a top club
Sold this January
This forces Liverpool to take a big decision: either accept the player’s demand or lose him. The club is therefore planning his replacement, and this is where Jeremy Jacquet comes on the scene.
This clarifies why they are scouting the young Frenchman at various games this season.
How could this turn out for Liverpool?
As Liverpool is currently unable to sign an extension contract with Konate, they will eventually need a defensive replacement. And going for the young French center-back seems a low-risk option. The plan is to sign him for a long-term deal. This will help the club to resolve the defensive problems and focus on the attack lineup, as there are rumors of Mohamed Salah’s exit in January.
Moreover, Jacquet is a safe option, as he is talented and young, which means he can provide for the club. He can sign a long-term contract, helping the club avoid the short-term risk. The player will also certainly consider joining the club. After Konate’s exit, he will be guaranteed regular playing chances. He can also grow better under the shadow of a world-class defender, Virgil Van Dijk.
But the player is already signed with Rennes till 2029. This can cause the club to spend a big parting fee to convince the French club for the transfer.
Author’s Opinion
In my view, if Liverpool can transfer Jermey Jacquet for a long-term deal with a low parting fee. It would be a very bold and smart strategic move by the club. The young defender is really talented and is performing really well in Ligue 1. Moreover, Jamie Carragher said, “Liverpool will be completely fine if Konate leaves; he is not Virgil Van Dijk.” He also added that “I’d like him to stay, but if he doesn’t stay, they will sign someone else.”
