The fall-out of Mohamed Salah’s interview at Elland Road on Saturday has continued throughout this week.

The Egyptian is now unlikely to feature in Saturday’s Premier League clash against Brighton and set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations amid mounting speculation about his long-term future at the club. The forward had told his family to attend the Brighton game, hinting it could be an emotional farewell before departing for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The controversy has reignited speculation about Salah’s future, with Saudi Pro League clubs circling once again. A representative from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) stated on December 9 that they are “closely monitoring Salah’s situation” and believe a transfer could occur, either through a loan or by acquiring his contract. Omar Mugharbel, the chief executive of the Saudi Pro League, confirmed that Salah is “for sure” one of their transfer targets. However, it also looks like the Major League Soccer across the Atlantic are also taking notice at the situation.

Major League Soccer (MLS) Commissioner Don Garber, speaking to a swathe of reporters this week, has urged the Liverpool No.11 to speak to Lionel Messi or Thomas Muller to see how happy the pair are in North America:

“Obviously, if [Salah] ever decides to come to Major League Soccer, we’d welcome him with open arms,” Garber said. “I’d say he should reach out to Leo [Messi] and reach out to Thomas Müller and see how happy they’ve been and how successful they’ve been and how much they’ve really embraced being in Major League Soccer.” Despite the public acrimony, Liverpool reportedly has no intention of selling Salah in January. Senior club officials have emphasized that Salah is under contract until summer 2027, and his recent absence from the starting lineup was regarded as a temporary tactical decision. The club appears perplexed by the rapid deterioration of relations but maintains that Salah needs to clarify his intentions before any discussions about his departure can proceed.
