Why Harvey Elliott has been axed at Aston Villa in Liverpool transfer hell

Strong form of other players: The primary reason cited by manager Unai Emery is the "other players performing very well." In particular, the resurgence and consistent high performance of Emi Buendia - who also plays the attacking midfield role - has limited Harvey Elliott's opportunities.

Tactical fit and adaptation challenges: Elliott has reportedly "not yet fully adjusted to Emery’s strict footballing demands." According to a report from The Athletic, the No. 10 role in Emery's system requires a player who is "tactically erudite," recognising pressing triggers and being "calm and composed in possession."

Exit of sporting director: The decision to sign Elliott in the closing hours of the summer window was driven by former sporting director Monchi, who left Villa just weeks later after acquiring the attacking midfielder.

Financial issues: Should Elliott's permanent transfer be confirmed upon making 10 appearances, it'll set the club back £35million. Continuing to avoid the punishments of the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Regulations, inking a deal for the 22-year-old doesn't make much fiscal sense for a club that has struggled to invest in recent transfer windows.

Focus on consistency: Emery noted that the team is "very demanding to achieve individual and collective performance" and the "consistency we need." Villa have won nine of their last 10 league games as their superb form makes it difficult to change the rhythm of the side to integrate Elliott.
