Liverpool have endured a difficult spell in recent weeks, with speculation continuing to swirl around Mohamed Salah’s future. The Egyptian forward has been at the centre of debate following recent squad decisions, and uncertainty remains over how manager Arne Slot plans to manage his attacking options during a packed winter schedule.
As always, the transfer rumour mill is in full swing ahead of the January window, which opens on the 1st. Several Saudi Pro League clubs, including Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr and Al-Ahli are once again being linked with Salah. Reports suggest they remain intent on testing Liverpool’s resolve.
The Reds return to Premier League action on Saturday with a home fixture against Brighton, but it is still unclear whether Salah will be back in the squad. Liverpool were without several first-team players in Tuesday night’s Champions League win over Inter Milan for various reasons, though one key absentee is expected to return this weekend.
Three senior forwards missed the trip to Italy – Salah, who was omitted following his explosive post-Leeds comments, Cody Gakpo, who is currently sidelined with an injury, and Federico Chiesa, who was ruled out due to illness.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Monday evening, Slot explained: “Federico is ill, so that is poor timing you could say. But it’s not something you can do anything about. “So, we are monitoring his situation. If he has an amazing recovery – which I, we, doctors don’t expect – he might travel tomorrow. But let’s have a fair expectation, that’s not what I expect.”
According to the Daily Mail’s Lewis Steele, Chiesa “should be back in contention” to face Brighton on Saturday. The Italian winger was close to joining the squad on the day of the match, but his condition prevented him from travelling.
Since arriving from Juventus in August 2024, the 28-year-old has largely been used as a substitute. Chiesa has made 15 appearances in all competitions so far, scored two goals and provided three assists this term.
